TSN: 4K and TV stuff

There likely is an older thread that I could have asked this in but I couldn't see anything relevant in the first couple of pages so here we go.

I recently switched back to Shaw (doing that dance to avoid paying the ridiculous full price that TV, Internet has become these days).
We've had a 4K TV for a while but had older cable boxes and could never take advantage.

On my guide the SN - 4K and SN One - 4K appear to cover the same shows and their HD channels and I was able to watch some hockey yesterday on those channels and it was glorious.

The TSN - 4K channel on the other hand didn't have regular programming.
Simply a message that the next live event was a Dec-16th Raptors game.

Online TSN lists today's game vs the Caps as being broadcast on TSN3 - 4K but I don't have that option on my guide.
I talked to Shaw and the employee was not confident in the info and didn't really know what I was talking about.

Does anyone know the deets on the 4K TSN Jets games?
Next Saturday's Canucks game is on SN - 4K, but it looks like I'll have to watch the TSN games in HD (which know appears blurry and fuzzy in comparison).

Are there any other tricks to accessing the content (i.e. through an app on a Firestick Max or something).

What do we know about this HF Jets? Is this a Shaw problem vs MTS or are we all hooped?

- Thanks

I don't believe TSN films everything in 4k yet. Definitely not on all 5 channels.

It's not a Shaw vs MTS thing, it's just a TSN thing. I'm not 100% on that but that seems most likely to me based on past instances of these specialty content things (like 3D TV for instance).

It's very exceptional for TSN to put anything in 4K. Just special events, mainly, and even then it's spotty... as I recall, Team Canada's World Cup matches weren't broadcast in 4K which was weird given what a big deal they are. Both TSN and SN have dedicated 4K channels and SN has a lot more 4K content. I've never seen a Jets game in 4K on TSN.

It's a bit like the early days of HD around 15 years ago when HD broadcasts were the exception and not the rule.

It’s weird that TSN lists several Jets games on their 4K content.

I just want to make sure that I’m not missing something.

My Shaw TV guide doesn't list the game as playing in 4K usually but it will be on when you go to the channel even if the guide doesn't show it as being on. The annoying part is the feed will cut out if the game goes over the alloted time. So if the game is set to go until 9:00pm, the 4K feed will shut off at 9:00pm on the dot. After that I have to switch to the HD channel.

As a guy who records basically every game and never watches live-live, that is unfortunate. I have a family dinner tonight and won’t be able to test this theory out today. But I’ll try for the next one (HD recording as an extra back up to catch the end of the game. I’m not sure any game as ever ended when it is scheduled to. That is why I record an extra hour on every game.

Its funny i just switched to Shaw too after years with MTS , i had gotten rid of my home phone line and they said switching my home phone number to my cell would be easy. Phone number got switched alright but i lost all Internet and TV . After all of that shitshow i said what are you guys going to do for me to keep me as a customer because Shaw is offering me a great deal. They said 20 bucks off your next bill.:help:So i said hey that's pretty good let me think about that, hung up and switched to Shaw. Called Bell back to say i was going to Shaw and THEN they said oh i think we can match their offer. I said ya thanks but no thanks ya idiots .

You only get deals as a new customer. Show any loyalty by staying passed the initial deal and they Jack your bill up. Why is acquiring a costumer their only concern? Keeping a customer is just as valuable but that isn’t how things play out.

What you are saying is essentially what the help staff said yesterday. He sounded so unsure that I doubted he was right but maybe he is?

I turfed MTS after frustration with being passed around various departments when I had concerned about my landline and cell and tv service. Within a month I moved my tv, internet, cell and alarm services and got rid of my landline. Cancelling was hilarious and now they wanted to listen and tried throwing perks my way, shipped had sailed by then.

2 reasons really. One, the business measures success by total subscribers and new customer acquisitions. Secondly, promotional rates aren't sustainable for the business to be profitable.

He's correct if that's what he said. Even now with this Jets vs Washington game, my guide says, "Next 4k live event December 16 at 7:30pm EST" but the game is on the channel in 4K right now.

Had a similar experience with Rogers. Was willing to give them another chance after their outage a few months back so I ordered a new phone on a deal and went to pickup in store. When I got there they had no record of my order despite me showing them an email receipt. Drove home and talked to support. When I asked what they'd do to compensate me for wasting an hour and a half of driving there and back to make the pickup appointment at 5pm during rush hour, they said "if you purchase and activate a new tablet on your plan, we'll waive the activation fee". Cancelled all my rogers stuff on the spot and switched back to MTS. :D

You can contact customer service and they will give you a deal to retain customers. I am with freedom and pay $30 for 20 gb of data unlimited everything else.

I think some sort of game theory is at play with the new customer thing.

They don't give the deals they used to. Last time I called they offered not to increase the bill

Bell, Rogers, Shaw make a tonne of money because we don't have enough options in Canada with all the regulations . I would think keeping a long time customer happy with a decent bill would make more sense than having a customer change providers and now be getting absolutely nothing from that customer.

Corporations are for profits first, especially if keeping that customer costs too much. Especially on a money sink like TV. Internet is where the money is.

Interesting, I have Shaw Blue Curve and that is what I always see on the TSN 4K channel... I didn't realize that they actually show the game in 4K anyway. What is up with that, how hard can it be to update the program guide accurately?

LOL. At the rate things are declining, in a couple of years time when you call customer retention, they will offer to not come to your house and punch your face if you stay on as a customer.

Totally agree but i had everything with Bell, home phone, TV , Internet and cell and they lost all of that because they were so dumb and horrible to deal with. They lost alot of money by me saying see ya later. I know someone who works for Bell and they switched everything to Shaw.

Not true in my case. Was with Shaw for years, and they would always continue my deal when I called. This went on for about 8 years. And to be clear, it was a good deal.

MTS / Bell guy came to my door with a deal I couldn't say no to and finally when I called Shaw they said they would match but I honestly just wanted a change for change's sake.

I used to do this kind of stuff on the other side of this.

They used to offer better deals to stay, but they became less and less of a deal as time went on. They're not seeing it as "I paid $200 a month and you lost that", they're seeing it as "We made $25 on that and any lower monthly rate isn't worth it".

Sometimes it's worth it to change just for the new hardware. I have a friend who is, shall we say, not price-sensitive. So he kept his ancient MTS box for a very long time because he never changes providers (and I guess he never cared enough to proactively upgrade).

You sign up for a deal with a new provider and they will typically throw in their latest and greatest equipment.

You can generally get the new equipment if you ask for it (say there are issues with the current stuff)

I was with Shaw from 2005 to 2019. They screwed me over when I was moving that year and the new condo had a deal with MTS anyways. So I switched. But once the deal was done and I phoned to see what else could be done they only offered a really tiny discount. They industry rewards people who switch providers every year or two. As an example the companies could look at accounts that don’t switch continuously and give out things like a free On Demand rental or access to some pay channels for a month or something. There’s plenty of ways they could add value to existing customers. But generally they don’t do it. I couldn’t test out the 4K live option as I wasn’t home but I’ll be checking it out next game. Then I’ll be harassing there help people to submit requests to update the guide and make sure that the fees isn’t cutting out before the end of the game. Well maybe I won’t get all that accomplished but I’ll try.

You may hear this a lot, but Bell sucks IMHO - their nouveau corporate deafness is intense. I dropped my land line and Bell package > 5 years ago...just ran with state of the art house wifi (NOT Bell) and stream everything on demand. It works perfectly, but one needs a late-model TV loaded up with good tech to smooth out the experience. I can use either my phone or laptop to initiate the stream *without* screen mirroring (clumsy as hell).

You can generally get the new equipment if you ask for it (say there are issues with the current stuff)
This is the way to go.
