Yeah i don't mind 3 on 3 in the regular season NHL because there's 82 games.

This tournament should be 5 on 5 or 4 on 4 OT even in preliminaries

I grew up with a 5 on 5 regular season OT with the teams sharing a point each if there was no winner.

The tie used to be a non-issue among Canadian fans. American sports fans generally don't care about hockey but having a tie breaker every game was seen as a way to attract some new American fans.

I'm curious how the younger Canadian audience that grew up with a winner every game feel about ties. Like I said before, ties were a total non-issue for my generation of Canadian fans.

I grew up watching hockey in the late 90s and early 2000s. In my opinion, there was nothing worse than ending a hard fought game in a tie. I’ll take 3 on 3 and/or shootouts any day before a tie.

With the whole geopolitical situation surrounding us and the USA, I hope this game is extra spicy. Canada must win.

It's exciting as a fan, but not sure the Canadian players can connect to the Canadian angst since most of these guys are making their living down there.

The American players will be amped from the moment the star spangled banner is booed, if they weren't amped already.

For sure. At the end of the day it's just a hockey game but it would still be nice to make a statement.

I don’t know why some fans were questioning the integrity of this tournament. All the games have been wonderful to watch. The players are taking the games seriously and they all got that playoff atmosphere.

Canada vs USA should be on another level. This tournament has been a success and should only get better.

The "wins" in ot under these gimmicks feel pretty plastic though. It's a like a tie game trying really hard to masquerade as something else.

The excitement is generated by the tight standings which give the extra points significance but they do feel farcical.

For me, it all came down to whether the players take it seriously, which i suspected they would because it would help them make a case for the Olympics.

Dismissing the tournament right off the bat was a very HF thing to do and I suspect a good number of those that said they have no interest are watching anyways.

They really need to change the rules of it in the NHL. It was fun when it was first implemented because teams didn’t know what to do. But this holding on to the puck and circling back shit is nauseating.
Not as nauseating as 5 on 5 OT where you know 99 times out of 100 the game will end tied and you just lost 5 minutes of your life for absolutely no reason. We had come to point where it was safe to leave the arena 10 minutes into the 3rd if the score was still tied. People forget history way too easily.

I think these are two different things. The security that came with leads was due to the way the game was enforced.

Water skiing, and hacks and whacks to the hands were good defensive plays. Goalie equipment was increasing exponentially.

Star players have more freedom to operate now, and that is why we are seeing more lead changes and suspense.

It's far more difficult to defend than it used to be.

It was not just that. Defense first team were clearly playing for the extra point as soon as the 2nde period. Now it's more dangerous specially against team of your own division. Yeah you get the extra point but 3 on 3 and SO is in favor of the team with star player forwards and if you play against your own division you get the extra point as a defensive team but you also risk giving them 2 points. Before that there was no risk as a good goalie and good defense was getting you thru the 5 minutes 5 on 5 OT easily.

IMO, if either Hanifin or Faber were part of Canada’s healthy top 6 there would have been another 1999-style Skills Summit recently but I’m supposed to believe Murrica has the d advantage

(Tbf, Canada legitimately needs to have another circlejerk summit soon regardless of these roster compositions)

EDIT: Makaaaaaaaaaaaaar
