It has to be something stupid, because even if MSG was unavailable in early October each year they could still start the year on a road trip no problem

It's usually the other way around.

Many times the Rangers home schedule is front loaded, meaning they've already played 9 home games by the end of October. Usually because the Garden is packed with the Knicks, college basketball tournaments, and other things in February and March.

This could pay tremendous dividends later in the season.
