14. As the NCAA Tournament begins this week, there's some names to watch for with potential NHL interest. The overall class is not considered particularly strong, but teams always mine for gems. Some of the more familiar names are North Dakota’s Drake Caggiula (Ottawa is there, but Philadelphia, with his former coach Dave Hakstol in place, shouldn't be discounted); Providence’s Brandon Tanev (Boston is a pursuer); Yale goalie Alex Lyon (several teams).

In goal, Kevin Boyle from Lowell and Providence’s Nick Ellis, who could end up in Winnipeg’s camp. Calgary fans will watch Mark Jankowski, wondering if he stays with them or goes elsewhere. Same for the Bruins with Yale defenceman Rob O’Gara.
I hope there are no legs to this rumor. O'Gara should have a pretty good opportunity here.

30. One thing nagged at me from this good Chris Johnston piece on Nikita Soshnikov. Who was the other NHL team trying to snare Soshnikov’s services? Young Mr. Johnston says it was Boston.

O'Gara's a senior. It's the risk you run when you let your college guys get to their senior year.

That said, my understanding is that the Bruins like O'Gara, and O'Gara likes the organization. My guess is that he signs shortly after his college career has finished.

No doubt he wants to finish his NCAA career as a captain, while graduating with an Ivy League degree. I think if he were considering free agency, you'd have heard more about it by now. He'd be pretty highly touted.

What do you think his upside is?

With the Bruins lack of high end depth... maybe he sees this as an opportunity?

If O'Gara's been watching the Bruins and wants an opportunity to compete for a top 6 spot in the NHL, I'm not sure he's going to find a better place to try for it than right here. The Bruins need help....

I was gonna say, after watching Seidenberg last night, if I'm Sweeney, I'm telling him that there are at least three spots open for the taking right now.

I'm not sure what his upside is. I know Kirk is and has been very, very high on him for a long time and he's right 99/100 times. O'Gara has (pretty quietly) gotten a lot better over the years, too. Would be an absolute shame to lose him. He would definitely be given a shot.

i thought the bruins were close on max contracts? can they just cut somebody to relieve that? im clueless on the logistics of actual roster space

I mean unless its some unforeseen circumstance Boston is a fantastic spot for a player like O'Gara. Playoff team, potential to play in the top 4 as soon as this year, etc etc.

If he leaves then theres nothing the Bruins could have done to keep him.
