Trade involving 2 guys with trade protection that would likely waive for their destination. Probably needs some blanks filled in:

To NJ:
Colton
Prospect/pick from CHI

To Avs:
Seth Jones @ 7.5M or under

To Blackhawks:
Mercer
prospect/pick from Avs

Obviously just a base of the deal, curious to hear some thoughts. I think something relatively significant would have to be going back to NJ from CHI, i.e. a Ryan Greene type of prospect, and maybe a pick is kicked back in some form.

Hawks are not retaining 2 million for 5 more years for a guy they likely can trade at full cap and get a good piece back. The cap is projected to go up 30 million per season over the next 3 Summers. Jones playes 25 minutes a game. Trouba brough back positive value in a trade and is owed 8 million next year and plays 20 minutes a game (not particularly well at that).

If somehow the Avs were willing to include Ritchie as the prospect (which they will not) and there were another sweetner in addition to Mercer....maybe the Hawks retain that much that long. But short of something ridiculous, that won't be a happening.

Otherwise Jones can stay mentoring the numerous LHD perculating through the Hawks systen to give a stable partner that can eat minutes as they develop and keep Levshunov and Rinzel slotted in roles better suited to young kids breaking into the league. In 2 or 3 years when/if one or both Levshunov or Rinzel grow into a big minute prominent role, the Hawks can move Jones when he represents 8% of a 115 million cap for similar value as what is proposed here (again unless the Avs prospect we are talking about is Ritchie which is not realistically going to be the conversation).

Can't see why NJ picks up the phone. If you think something significant needs to go back to NJ, then you should put something significant and not just use a cop out "pick/prospect".

Would have to be a pretty significant plus to NJD to get 5 years older for no reason.

You can have a day 2 pick for Colton if you want to clear his cap tho, since there will be likely 0 other teams he would waive his NTC for

Good luck! Especially with that full NMC :biglaugh:
Losing (a lot and for the forseable future) has a funny way of changing one's perspective on things. No he is not likely to waive to go back to Columbus where he forced himself out, but I would guess he would be open to probably half the league at this point after 4 straight seasons of worst or almost the worst in the league teams. With the cap going up rapidly, there is a much wider pool of teams that could fit Jones on a roster too.

In the end, nothing is forcing the Hawks to trade him for scraps which Mercer, some rando Av's prospect and getting the privledge of retaining 10 million in salary/cap for the trouble. Jones seems like a good soldier that can help develop the young D (and team in general) to get them turning the corner sooner.

Did you read the end? i.e. Ryan Greene.. still a cop out? It was more just leaving space for other's insights. Feel free to share what would make NJ pick up the phone instead of just a general dismissal.

The rationale is that NJ would like to add a guy like Colton, and would need to shed cap to do it. I think Colton + a good prospect ready to make the jump by the time Colton's deal is up is a good return for Mercer.

SO THE CAP WILL BE 180 MILLION IN 3 YEARS?
