In yesterday's Knicks game, 5 players on the Knicks got DNP-CDs. They woke up as active roster players; they got to the arena as active roster players; they did warmups as active roster players; the game started and they were active roster players.

And then they just didn't play. Not one second amongst them. At any point Thibs could have called their number.

The Garden employs two coaches who don't know how to allocate playing time.

Yeah thats kind of what I'm getting at.

Playing the top unit for almost the full 2 minute every time out is stupid.
The only way to stop that is to start the second unit which is stupid. Otherwise the first unit is only gonna go off when the situation on the ice dictates that they go off.

Gorton needs to start catching a lot of shit. We traded a 2nd to open up cap space and used it on Strome and Jack Johnson. He hired Quinn. He continues to preside over this shit show where NONE of our top prospects are blossoming. The only one who is is Fox, a guy we traded for. And kind of ADA another guy we traded for (But who fails to take that leap defensively and keeps getting scratched for dumb shit so it's hard for me to say he's really developing). Then we make these absolutely imbecilic long terms mega deals for Trouba and Kreider? WTF!? Love Kreider but he wasn't worth that contract TWO or THREE years ago, let alone now (OK maybe three years ago). Trouba? Do we even f***ing scout these people or does our front office just see what points they produced lately? Do we trade for guys who fit our scheme? What even is our scheme? Is there any sort of shared vision or cooperation when it comes to assembling a roster? Or is it just put out young guys and cross your fingers they magically develop?

Chytil, Kravtsov, Lias, Hajek, Rykov, and now Kakko. A f***ing goddamn 2nd overall pick in the draft and he's f***ing stagnated if not outright regressing with us. Can someone explain to me why everyone here feels his skating is off and yet as far as I can tell this organization has done jack and shit to address it?

And wtf does this quinn guy do to maximize anyone's talents? What does he do to train them up and improve them? Why the f*** are we making the same stupid ass mistakes, coming out flat, f***ing up our line changes, etc. over and over?

Now Laf is getting benched for half a period too.

It's starting to feel like a dysfunctional organization that doesn't know wtf it's doing. The kind of place where we see bright young talents flat out quit on the organization, regress or stagnate at an alarming rate.

Whatever is going on, Gorton better get it to unf*** itself quick. Or no...that's the problem. He seems to be crossing his fingers in the hopes that it unf***s itself. But that's not how good franchises are run. You're supposed to have a cohesive structure in place and then use that structure to help bring along new guys and keep the older guys going.

Quick observations:

1 - Kakko looked great in the first period. Unlike last year, he's getting on players faster, causing turnovers. When he does that, that whole line works. But once the penalty parade happens every game, his ice time shrinks and then he looks slower, less engaged and sluggish. You can blame Quinn, but you can also blame a kid who's not quite gotten over the mental hurdles of the pro game. He'll get there.

2. Chytil (and to some extent, Kakko). great skater, decent puck skills, but when is he going to learn to stop trying to go through 3 players when he's all by himself? He's gotta start using his speed to push back defenders and then curl back and wait for reinforcements. or at least dump it past the defense and go get it. He and Kakko both do this and it's a gigantic waste of possession. Chytil at this point, with that many NHL games under his belt, should know better. Honestly, how he uses his linemates in the offensive zone will be the difference between him being a winger or a center. Right now, it's very Dubinsky reminiscent.

3. As much as I want Laf to work on the line with Strome and Panarin, I think what that line really needs is a fast guy who can retrieve pucks in the corners and be defensively responsible. Because Strome isn't fast enough or strong enough to retrieve pucks. And it's not his game. I'd like to see a few others in that spot: Gauthier, PDG or, yes, Howden, would be a much better fit. But sadly we have zero center depth so that's likely not happening.

4. K'Andre, really torn. I think the minute K'Andre finds himself having to cover up for his D partner or other forwards, he really gets caught in between. Brendan Smith looked more erratic tonight and thus I K'Andre looked more erratic as well. There's no need to worry just yet about him playing with the big club as there is nowhere else to send him, but i'd like to see him refine his game and work intensely with D coaches. Though I likely sit him for DeAngelo next game.

5. Strome -- had the game on his stick and got cute Really frustrating. He's very much who he is. A decent, not great, skater, above average vision, does well when he has lots of space. And is experienced enough to take shifts on the PK. But that's about it. He is to 2nd line centers what cardboard cutouts are to real fans in the stands. If you look quickly enough it seems fine. But don't look too closely or you'll be disappointed.

6. Jack Johnson...2-3 times a game he makes a decent outlet pass.

7. Buch -- they need to find him a lot more ice. He's the new Fast, but he can score.

8. Not only did Mika get hurt but Kreids definitely hurt his hand on that Panarin shot. He had some issues handling the puck after. Hopefully it's just a bad bruise, but usually when it's the hand, its a small fracture somewhere. Mika -- was it a shoulder?

9. I want more Gauthier. He's effective. His speed and size create space and turnovers. PLAY HIM.

10. Shesterkin looked very solid in the 3rd.

11. Fox was miles better than any other Ranger on the ice. Panarin was next. Lemieux had one of his best games in a long time.

12. Until this team learns how to defend as a 5 man unit, and get MUCH better at managing the puck, most games are going to be a struggle. Even if Shesty or Georgy stand on their heads.

the kakko/laf need more icetime cries are way out of touch. how its allocated has certainly been questionable, but to act as if those two are linemates or icetime away from breaking out, or that that is any sort of solution is nuts.

the biggest problem with this team is there is no identity. it looked like maybe trouba was taking the reigns because while mika is a star and seems like a good locker room guy and kreider seems like a great example to follow...neither comes off particularly inspiring. trouba i had hope for as a guy who could get the energy level up. thats the biggest thing, theres no energy on this team, no real camaraderie. i don't think its a divided room or has tension, more just sort of shapeless - the leaders are silent and the bench follows. this is where a team like the isles with their 4th line differentiates...those guys can turn momentum in a shift and the whole bench is in a different gear, the room rallies around that effort. we don't have a single guy who will go out and make a difference like that being physical and injecting some energy.

beyond that the structure has been gross for most of the start. even when the d breaks out clean the puck almost always winds up on the stick of someone standing still, skating into a dead end, or on a rush with no support. and when there's pressure its up the boards to someone standing still..mostly into a scramble at the line or to one guy coming up in support to go on a 1 on 3 rush. there's just no functionality or purpose. the best offense has come off turnovers. there's way too much skill on that roster to be this bad moving the puck. and look its not about lines or continuity, these are nhl players, they should be able to break a puck out competently and turn it into offense with some regularity. linemates come into play when you're talking about a no look backdoor setup or something...we can't hold the puck long enough in the o zone 5 on 5 to think about that kinda thing so right now it doesn't matter. until the former is addressed the latter is just a footnote, and the line combos are an afterthought.

He's not bad but he's overrated IMO. Good backup, that's it.

He's not consistent enough!

I dunno why everyone loves him. I'm fine with him as a backup but he gets talked about like he's a starter, he really isn't.

He is too inconsistent to be a starter but he is definitely a high end backup, borderline 1b goalie. But that is a very important thing to have. The days of the workhorse goalie are coming to an end and most teams will be moving towards a 60/40 split. Those are valuable points on the line.

The Kreider extension was bizarre especially after he traded away a much better player in Miller for nothing. Of Miller, Kreider and Hayes, we kept the worst player in classic Rangers fashion. And it went against every move Gorton has made with our older core players. Getting rid of them at the perfect moment before we had to commit to them or were stuck with them. Callahan, Stepan, Brassard, McDonagh, Zuccarello, etc. Guess he did not learn his lesson with Girardi and Staal.

And we have a potential crisis on our hands with an abundance of RHD but the worst LHD in the league and what does Gorton do? He drafts ANOTHER RHD with the Hurricanes 1st round pick. And speaking of that pick, the contract he gave to Skjei was an abomination and it's a miracle we got out of it. Imagine with all of our cap problems we had Skjei's $5.25 million cap hit on top of it?

It’s taken me awhile... But I’m soooo f***ing done with Quinn.

I realize coaches like to reward certain players with ice time (AV/Glass) but this horses ass has no idea what he’s doing with players minutes.

This was evident to a lot of us with Lias/Howden.

ADA should have been in the lineup tonight. Geo shouldn’t have started the second. Strome had the second most TOI out of all our forwards.

WTF is this idiot doing? Are Gorton+JD really confident this guy will get the most out of the team they’ve assembled? I’m not.

I don’t want him to get the most out of the team assembled, I want him to f***ing develop Kakko and Lafreniere.

He needs new marching orders: F*** the playoffs. Turn the kids into stars.

Obviously, but I’m talking about the TOI distribution. It’s a waste to split it evenly between units. Roll your top unit heavily, like all elite powerplays do, and have your 2nd unit fill spot duty. The only change we need to make is swapping Strome for a LHS on the right wall; maybe Tony for Fox as the PPQB, but that’s more of a toss-up for me as long as neither of those two are replaced by Trouba on either unit.

The problem we run into with the PP unit we have, is that after a 2 minute PP for that top unit, you basically exhaust your 1st and 2nd line.

Panarin and Strome, on the ice with Kreider and Zibanejad seems like a solid idea if you then play Buchnevich and Lafreniere at even strength coming off the PP but Quinn doesn't do that.

I will predict this. If Schneider gives the coaching staff no choice but to give him a spot in the next two to three years, Trouba will be asked for his no trade list.

Situation is worse than that.... Trouba has a No Movement Clause in his contract through the 2023/2024 season.... Likely wanted to ensure he couldn't be traded/moved while his significant other was attending medical school...

How about these lines

Bread-Mika-Buch
Laf-Filip-K2
Kreider-Howden-Gauthier
Lemiux-Rooney-Digiuseppe

Lindgren-Trouba
Miller-Fox
Smith-ADA

Strome out

Glad the coach is getting pointed out as being a problem. It’s been obvious for a long time that his structure is awful. I will say this too, the 2 out of 3 games have been plagued by poor goaltending. The first devils goal Georgie waffle boards his glove hand and allows a pathetic rebound that just can’t happen. I won’t lay that one on anyone but him. He’s got to catch the puck. One of the goals( I believe the 3rd but might have been the 4th) Trouba hits the defender right in front of him with a flip wrist shot from the point leading to Hughes breakaway. Anyone whose played D knows that the coach always preaches get your shot from the point passed the guy in front of you. If it’s blocked by the net fine but you can’t hit the guy directly in front of you. Worse part is Trouba had about 10 feet to dump the puck down into the corner. He’s making it a habit to shoot the puck into shin pads this year and it’s got to stop.

Quinn’s use of Alexis is not helping him already but Alexis needs to engadge defensively. Is obvious he has some terrible habits he’s learned from dominating junior days in terms of defending( glides around a lot, makes soft plays just to name a few.) Quinn’s hold accountable stance is nice in theory but when the guy is young and new to the league you can teach and give him ice time at key spots. Maybe that’s what he was trying to do but the allocation of ice time certainly remains confusing most games.
