Boston Bruins 24-25 Roster/Cap thread XVII

[The Storm]

I hate to say it at this point, but I almost want the Bruins to slide down the standings and somehow slip into a top 10 draft pick. They are jinxed with the injury bug this year and are going nowhere in the playoffs.

Pick up another 1st round pick via trade and begin the re-tool/rebuild. Not a lot of good free agents this off-season either. Center is the biggest need and Tavares and Brock Nelson are the 2 best Centers available. Ugh. I cannot root against the Bruins in reality. I used the word "almost".

They are currently sitting at #13. They drafted McAvoy at #14.

I’m not forgetting anything - I simply (and theoretically, not a certainty of course) value what he could return more than I do his floundering on an overall deficient team that has no other straight forward paths to restocking

Pasta scoring 50 on a chronically DNQ team isn’t value to me

I don’t prefer this path - I see it as, potentially, an overall more viable path big picture

I’d be much more inclined to move McAvoy than Pasta….probably by a huge margin.

Not saying I want to trade him, but (all things being equal, healthwise) McAvoy could also bring back a big return and while Lohrei will never be his equal defensively, the way he’s developing, at least he projects to be close to McAvoy. Up front there is nobody who projects to be in Pasta’s stratosphere.

Geekie & pasta have said they have chemistry- they are together off the ice because they have kids same ages and wives are close

They want Patrik Laine because they can’t comprehend Morgan Geekie is good

They decided in November when Geekie was struggling and benched he sucked and they don’t and likely ever were able to change an opinion with additional information

Geekie is one of the few guys this year that haven’t made me want to change channels. Guy puts in an effort nightly and seems to actually give a damn out there

The only reason to do it is if you are bringing back proven top young players who address needs that are harder to fill and where the ages better align with where Boston is heading over the next 5 years. Like players in their early 20's who project to be probable legit 1C or elite top pair D. I'm not sure who those players would be that could be had, are genuinely on their way as proven NHL stars, and don't come with question marks.

An argument could be made for somebody like E Pettersson... but I have questions there so I say no. I'm not sure who else to put on the list. I'm not interested in the Joe Thornton (or Seguin) style 4-for-1 trade where you get a few "good" players for a star. Note that I would not include Beniers or Byfield as the type of return to take in a Pastrnak deal. You need a player(s) at the next level above that.

Or in other words, sure we could probably dream up a few scenarios where trading Pasta is a valid choice but they are probably 99.5% unrealistic, if not ill advised.

Whenever you find yourself distracted by this or that imperfection of Pastrnak, remember how he would look playing next to a true star #1 center. An offensive machine. Imagine him with McDavid or McKinnon or a few others. Point being, probably most of the boredom (by which I mean taking him for granted) or nitpicking of watching Pastrnak in Boston is a function of who he plays with. In certain other situations, he would probably be the clear #1 scoring winger in the league, playing on a world beater 1st line.

Doesn’t even have to be a McDavid. Imagine him with a guy like Point. He’d be in the Hart conversation every year

I’m with you, but Id deal Poitras. I think he can be a key guy in getting an upgrade at the forward position givin the lack of assets the Bruins have, he may have to be put into play.

Swayman another guy only because he has no trade protection, I’d deal as long as it was a deal in getting a first line center back. Sweeney has had success finding keepers not so much high end centers.

Personally, I would have Poitras, Kastelic, and Lohrei in the retain group. Worth more to the Bruins than they are in a trade IMO.

Poitras for the simple fact that he's 20 years old playing in the NHL and holding his own for the most part. Only five players have more career points than him from that draft class. Three of which were top-4 picks.

Kastelic they just re-signed... and I really just like the way he plays. Also only 25.

Lohrei is still a project. His 2nd year as a pro. I wish there were more progress defensively, but again, maybe spoiled by having guys like Carlo and McAvoy come up at 19/20 and being able to hold their own with Chara by their side. I would lean towards patience with him. Leads all D in scoring. Size and skills galore combination we haven't seen since Douglas Hamilton IMO.
