Here’s my boy…high hopes for him

I remember in 2016 when Kuhnhackl got his first call up I said "Yeah, I actually don't think it's going to work out but I'm rooting for him" and he made it.

I can admit that I all but wrote Broz off based on his poor NCAA seasons. I would LOVE to be wrong about this.

Looks like I was right about Ortiz , just signed a PTO with WBS. Lee and Lindgren also recalled..big test for Wheeling to keep playing well with half their top 6 now gone at the moment.
As of an hour ago, no new signings for the defense. It looks like they will play Reading on Friday with five defensemen: Drake, Waugh, Roehl, Caeron, and Norton. Maybe Trevor Daley will suit up for them like he did last year for the Florida Everblades I think.

Why would you write off a player that improved every year he was in the NCAA?

It's natural to see guys improve each year in the NCAA but that isn't a surefire metric for determining if they have a good shot at making the NHL. And when you pot 11pts in 30gp, the only way to go is up. Typically NHL players from the NCAA are PPG players as sophomores or juniors. Seniors are whatever. Plenty of PPG seniors are undrafted.

So relative to draft positions in my "will-he-make-it-o-meter", yeah I wrote him off in 2023 when he posted 28pts in 40gp. Didn't mean I didn't think he was a good player, just not a surefire 2nd round NHL player.

I could end up being wrong though because, as Jesse pointed out, the development curve just may be longer with him.

They have been using Jankowski on D as well, so hes probably the 6th.

Broz looks a lot like the Rust we thought we were hopefully getting back when he was a prospect, 20 g 20 assist kind of player who works hard/skates fast. He ended up exceeding that but I believe Broz is scoring more in the AHL than Rust already, though.

Broz is going to be a very good player. Pens draft forwards next couple and add prospects in eventual trades also will deepen the system. He to me is the kind of forward that can develop at wing or center. Add in Rutger at LW and hopefully a top RW in the draft is the need this year.

They need Centers! We have nobody at that position of any repute.

That's why I was so high on us finishing bottom 5 and taking Misa. I was convinced he was going to be a wing in the NHL (and I think that's still my view) but lots of talk about him blossoming at center.

That said, this upcoming draft with the first, unless there is a surefire, blue chip wing or dman, they have to go center. I'm on the verge of "BPA" be damned. Best center available.

Yep! If there's a wide disparity in talent then yes, I can see going with another position. However, if it's relatively close you absolutely go with a center, 100%!

I mean, if we pick 3ov and Hagens and Misa are off the board and it's either Schaefer, Martone, or McQueen - sure, go Schaefer. At the 8-10ov slot, I'm really hoping Fondell drops to us but I doubt it.

As it looks now, I don't think there's any way we pick in the top 5 unless we actually sell parts off and tank on purpose, which we're clearly not going to do.

Most likely we pick around 10OA, I think. Which isn't rebuild territory, IMO.

We have to hope there's a long losing streak or at least going 4-9 over 13 games. They do have a seven game road trip coming up in a couple of weeks. Top 10 is even looking precarious at the moment. Hopefully KD starts selling off a bit. Being mediocre accomplishes nothing.

My worry is that if they finish 15ov for example, again, it's "hey we're close, let's try to be better next year" when McKenna is available.

You need franchise player to rebuild. McKenna is a franchise player.

I mean even if they finish 32nd it’s unlikely you select 1st. Can’t just be really bad for McKenna or bust as it’s not really within your control.

Even though that would be the best outcome.
