I have never taken the Bettman Cup seriously, nor have I watched a single game. It's just a commercial exhibition tournament. It's synthetic, soulless and, really, devoid of any value.

While this is also my preferred solution, I wish there would be some sort of compromise, because the NHL does have a couple of legitimate issues with the Olympics.
For example the IOC could allow other institutions (not just the NHL) to use footage from the Olympics for marketing purposes and so on. They would give a little to get a lot.
But any sort of agreement would require sensible adults on both sides, so my guess is we are shit out of luck.

Here is my understanding

It's not IIHF and they can absolutely make a team Russia.

However, the other nations (assuming no changes in the political landscape) can say 'f*** no'.

So it's tricky.lol

The second I hear NHL running an international event I get skeptical of how good it will be because of past tournaments.

Also, if they do only NHL players again then they will be very limited by how many teams can participate because, today, only 5 nations have enough NHL players. By 2028 Czechs SHOULD have enough but that is currently a optimistic outcome based on Jr Results and all the Czechs taken in top 100 last few years (and next few years). But, today, no guarantee.

If I were to guess and this is pure speculation

8 nations - Canada/Russia/Finland/Sweden/USA/Czechoslovakia/rest of Europe/U23 North America

And I would hate the living shit out of it.lol It'll be interesting to see how this ages. I feel ridiculous even typing it but could see it happening.lol

Same ref crews as 4 nations coming up.. I am guessing those will be NHL refs.

No to IIHF refs, yet Canadian refs at Team Canada games are okay.
