2026 Winter Olympics Italy Roster Talk

Considering that there's now three Italian teams in the ICEHL, I wouldn't be surprised if they go totally overboard with these naturalizations. I hope they will at least not naturalize players who are just marginally better than actual Italian players and then take spots from them.

I made a list of the players so far naturalized. Not all of them are yet eligible but when the time comes, they are.

Centers:

Anthony Bardaro
Dominic Alberga
Dante Hannoun
Steven Iacobellis

Wingers:

Alex Petan
Angelo Miceli
Daniel Catenacci
Joseph Mizzi
Adam Mascherin
Daniel Tedesco
Mike Halmo

Defence:

Cameron Ginnetti
Dylan Di Perna

Goalies:

Justin Fazio

I think the Austrian teams are going to be pretty disappointed about. For the Austrian law, it is really difficult to acquire citizenship.

I think Anthony Salinitri is a name that will be on the Italy team.

From Canada but has deep Italian roots.

There are players on your list who played just a few games in the ECHL and others like Mascherin who shined in the AHL. In the next couple of years we will see many strong guys joining Italian teams. Italy is going to put on the ice a team able to compete at Olympic level, but my concerning with this evolution is what may happen after the Winter Olympics are over. No budget left, no young prospects coming out, sadly no more hockey in Italy starting from 2027?

Last time Italy was in Olympics was in 2006.

Team looked like this:

Many north americans on their roster even back then.

Perhaps Nic Petan aswell.

Is there anything happening in Italian juniors?
Not too much. If would be a success if some prospect coming from Italian juniors would join any ICEHL teams as third-Line forward or as No. 5-6 defenseman or as backup goaltender. I had so much hope in Davide Fadani, but now I am afraid he is going to end up as a depth goaltender in Lugano. Other notable juniors playing abroad are:

Tommaso De Luca could be high pick next season. In my limited viewings of him, I have come away impressed.

And one more, even if I do not believe he is a candidate for the incoming NHL draft as reported here

Mascherin going to Italy seems like a bad move for his career. Are the salaries in Italy any good because going AHL -> SHL -> ICEHL seems like a downgrade

They've naturalized players before (look at some of the 1980s Austrian Olympic rosters), so there is clearly exceptions for athletes.

Salaries in Sweden are generally higher than in the AHL, but if he could not find a satisfactory contract there and one was available in Italy then that wasn't necessarily much of a downgrade. It is a much weaker league though.

I don't think the Austrians are looking to naturalize players anymore... they are setting about developing their own and have been for some time now.

Dennis Teschauer is the most recent player that I know of who got a "special interest" passport and he never even played for Austria in the end.

What can anybody tell me about Tommy Purdeller?
Can’t tell you a whole lot but I watched some Red Bull games to see Luca Auer and Purdeller often caught my eye instead. He flashed great puck skills and was really confident with the puck. Hockey sense might not be the best though.
