It's Quarter-Finals Day! .....and I'm working. Didn't book it off this year. Oh well .....

5 games today:

11 AM: Germany vs Kazakhstan - the relegation game. Winner is back next year. Loser goes down to Division 1A and is replaced by Denmark next year. Welcome back, Denmark!

12 PM: Sweden vs Latvia

2:30 PM: USA vs Switzerland

5 PM: Finland vs Slovakia

7:30 PM: Czech Republic vs Canada

In case people have forgotten the Czech's eliminated Canada last year in the QFs. Canada got off to a decent start, but Rousseau gave up 2 awful goals in the 1st. He did stop a penalty shot, though. Czechia got off to a 2-0 lead after 1.

However, Rousseau was much better in the 2nd period. Canada tied it at 2 by the end of 2.

The 3rd was evenly played, but with less than 30 seconds to go, Bonk, Mateychuck & the Poitras line get stuck in their zone during a fierce Czech possession. The puck leaves the zone but not enough for a Canada change. Czech's change.

Stancl comes on & easily takes the upper slot area & shoots. The puck hits Bonk's skate, hits the inside of the post & goes in with 11 seconds left in 3rd period.

Only 4 players are back from last year's team: Bonk, Cowan, Yager & Rehkopf.

For the Czech's, Hrabal is back in goal. Stancl is back (scored 2 goals in QF), as are Sale & Mastalirsky at forward. Goci & Galvas on D.

Hrabal is the biggest hurdle. Canada couldn't score on him last year with a better offensive team.

What's worse is they downgraded with role players so they could play specific roles like kill penalties, but our PK sucks. Lol

Our PP sucks, too.

If you want role players, you bring Cristall & Parekh and let them lead PP1, and you bring Misa to help lead the PK. I would have brought Misa instead of Martone.

One player who doesn't get enough criticism is Luchanko. I expected way more out of him.
If Lazary the actual Mem Cup winning coach was in charge how different would the roster look?
Even without Parekh there were so many other options they could have opted for.

For now Tanner Molendyk looks better than anyone else for keeping the puck moving at the back.

Are you sure it's Cameron who picked the players? I was under the impression that management did so.

It's agreed system. Management chooses who comes to the summer camp & hires the coach. They choose players for the Winter camp, but the coach has a say. Hey, I want this player to come kind of deal.

They usually let the coach make final decisions from the 30 kids or whatever that play at that December camp.

It seems like this team was selected early, though, like potentially from the summer camp.

Misa is here for sure. Probably Parekh, too. Hard to know how someone else would select it. He probably still chooses Cowan & Dickinson. I don't think he brings Pinelli or Gibson.

Management shouldn't have been back this year after last years performance. This team lacks high skill talent, grit and the desire to get to the inside of the ice. Lack structure in their own end.
The lack of discipline starts at the top with the coach. For example if Brent Suter was coaching this team he wouldn't stand for it
I don't understand why they would bring back the same management team considering all the issues the team had last year and the bigger pressure of winning due to hosting it. This team has very similar issues that last year's team faced.

The cost of hockey and living has gone up. People are less able, and less willing to spend the time and effort to keep their kids in hockey. The travel involved in even not so competitive leagues is nuts. Backyard rinks are not staying frozen in a lot of places, either.

(Mod)

There’s no way the late Walter Gretzky would have a viable backyard rink for Wayne today like he did in the early ‘60s.

Even up here in the Sault, outdoor rinks have a crazy-short life now.

Missed interference by the refs leads to Sweden taking a 1-0 lead. What a joke! As if Sweden needs any help.

Latvia gets an injury and go down 1-0 on the same missed call.

Interesting insights, I bought a package to this years world juniors game but was unable to attend. I've been selling my tickets, and have had decent success selling Canada tickets for $150-$250/ticket. Todays game I had them listed at $150, then dropped to $125, and now have it listed at $100 and still no takers. I'm guessing people are fed up with what they are seeing on the ice and not willing to spend lol. I'm also happy, thus far, I did not go to Ottawa to watch this, it would have been very low value for my time and money.
