Played senior hockey this year, he’s obviously a different case but I have wondered if we see the odd senior guy appear…

I know UNB has students playing senior hockey who are former junior guys who possibly would have ended up on CIS teams if they had come along after the rule change … I can’t imagine UNB adding these type of guys but I’m sure other schools have guys in similar situations.

This is a complete guess from me and could be 100% wrong but I am guessing he may been asked to leave the team for not maintaining a certain GPA... Again, I could be very wrong and its a complete guess but its pretty unusual to leave a team, go play senior hockey then come back to the same team

Could be any number of things . Mike Thomas did something similar at UNB, was attending fire fighting school, decided to go back to university .

Since Jan 1, 2025 there are 52 recruits to CIS teams on Elite Prospects. 2 are CHL. The rest are Junior A or lower.

The same period in 2024, there were 49 recruits with 7 being CHL and 3 ECHL.
Besides Jacob Holmes who is a really weird case, I don’t believe anyone else came from anything below Junior.A did they?

So far, the recruits do not seem to be that different from last year in terms of pedigree. Kind of encouraging in my opinion

Yes, there have been a handful of players from the GOJHL - most, however, have Jr A or Major Jr experience.
Totally OT but question for the Ontario guys …how good is the GOJHL actually ? I follow Jr.A and constantly see people arguing it’s as good as the mid-lower end CJHL leagues but without ever laying eyes on it , it’s hard to have any opinion on this .

I would argue the top team teams would be pretty decent in the CCHL or OJHL. Fair amount of good 16-17 year olds in the league who are not quite OHL ready.

There are too many GOJHL teams, which dilutes the talent pool, but it's equivalent to a low-end Jr A loop. Better than the NOJHL, weaker than the CCHL, roughly on par with the MJHL.

As a reference point, Leamington just made the move in 2023 from the GOJHL to the OJHL, while keeping a big chunk of their roster in tact. They won the GOJHL in '23, and then finished 4th overall in the OJHL in '24 (34-14-8).

Samuel Borschowa - Kamloops WHL - Manitoba

Jag Phangura - Surrey BCHL - York

Kaedan Johnston - Saginaw OHL - Guelph

Isaiah Peters - Winkler MJHL - U.Toronto

Both 2005-born…so leaving junior a year early. I think this will become more common moving forward.

Johnston played 103 games for 3 teams over 2 seasons, putting up .3 PPG, with a +/- of -27.
He's 20 years old and perhaps was told he won't be kept next season.

Borschowa is another 20 year old, with 116 games and .1 PPG and a +/- of -49.
Again, could be a numbers game.

I could be wrong but I would wager a lot of guys who are going to be pushed out as overages would rather get a start on a degree than play Jr.A in North Battleford…

Before this year, I would agree. But, in my opinion, I think CHL guys would get cut as 20s would rather play in the BCHL and try and get a D1 commitment instead of burning a year of eligibility trying in Usport.

I have a feeling that NCAA teams won’t be paying much attention to the BCHL after this year … If you aren’t good enough to play in the CHL as a 20 year old, you are going to have pretty mediocre if any NCAA offers on the table.. Besides if you play a year of USports and have a good rookie year you could always head south . It’s not a coincidence 19 year olds are committing to CIS teams this year.
