Hosting the U18 Worlds this year. Not the best team, and a lot of question marks about who will be part of the team and not.

My optimistic hope for the team.

Additions: Kevan (won't make USHL playoffs) Teddy Mutryn (won't make USHL playoffs) Reid (would be shocking if his team isn't eliminated in the first round, if they even make it), Potter (NCAA season will be over)

Maybes: Nycz (gonna be tight with the playoffs) Simpson (high school) West (high school)

Murtagh-McKinney-Kevan
Moore-Potter-Mooney
Fondrk-T. Mutryn-Berchild
Belle-O'Neil-Kvasnicka
Nelson

Barnett-Reid
Phillips-Trethewey
Schock-Schairer
Bracco-Kuehne

Quinlan
Boettiger
Slavick

Feel like this team could definitely win Gold, but I don't think if they just bring the same old team they usually do with promoting a few 17's and relying on the guys that've played all year for the NTDP that it'll work. This team isn't as talented and is injured. Needs about 4 outside additions.

Is Ottawa's Nic Whitehead an option for this team since the 67's missed the playoffs?

USA Hockey rarely takes CHL players but is he worth a look?

If we take a CHL player, it’s going to be Chase Reid or Blake Fiddler.

I doubt Whitehead has any shot.

With respect to Fiddler, what makes you think he will be available? Oil Kings are up 3-0.

And not having looked yet, are there any CHL forwards worth a look?

I didn’t say I think Fiddler will be available. I said he could be in consideration if he was available. Also, it’s 3-1, not 3-0, and his team is the 7 seed against the 2. I wouldn’t be sure they’re winning that matchup, although it’s looking good. Anyway, theoretically there might even be time to see how a second round goes before making a decision, although it’d be cutting it close.

I don’t think there are any CHL forwards that’ll be considered.

Regular season over for this team. Now onto the World Championships.

This is what I'm hoping for.

Moore-Potter-Fondrk
Murtagh-McKinney-Kevan
Mooney-Nelson-Berchild
T. Mutryn-O'Neill-Belle
C. Mutryn-Kvasnicka

Phillips-Reid
Barnett-Trethewey
Schock-Baldwin/Nycz (one of the two would be fine)
Bracco-Kuehne

Quinlan
Boettiger
Slavick

Mason West or Cooper Simpson would also be cool, but I won't push it.

It feels like the whole NTDP is falling off a cliff. Time to move on I think. Let the USHL teams draft our best talent.

I love the NTDP because it's an easy way to see a bunch of the top players on one team, but I have been advocating for awhile that the program is at a point of diminishing returns and its appropriateness for USAH'S future should be meaningfully evaluated. The program cares far too much about winning the IIHF U18s, which is the least important of the tournaments USAH cares about. And we could still win the U18s without having a mostly predetermined team to play in it.

It doesn't help that the current NTDP coaching and management staffs have delivered very disappointing results. I don't expect USAH to abandon the NTDP by any means, but I hope they'll at least get a fresh start with the coaching and staff.

Looks like they’re doing a camp this year

From the U17s: Berchild, Mutryn, Nelson

From outside the program: Potter, Horcoff, Kevan, Mutryn, Reid, Fiddler

Really speaks to how "less safe" the NTDP players are in their spots than typical year. Last year for instance, they called in a few guys but didn't cut anyone and just made a couple guys alternates.

Didn't notice until now that the Edmonton Oil Kings blew a 3-1 series lead. They entered it as an underdog 7th seed in a 2-7 matchup, but still, yikes. That makes Blake Fiddler available though, who I hope they bring.

Cool seeing the Mutryn Brothers both on here. Casey is an absolute stud and Teddy is pretty solid as well. They're an actual example of hockey growth in the States (even if came in a traditional market like Boston) considering their dad Scott was the Boston College Quarterback back in the 90s and is still involved with Boston College Football. I guess they caught the hockey bug early.

Also a very positive development that Potter and Horcoff are there. Speaks to not every separation being acrimonious, and hopefully a sign that USAH is maturing and holding less grudges than they have in the past.

Nice to see they still have an eye for talent regardless of where they're playing, as Reid being there is clear evidence of that.
