Red Sox/MLB 2025 Regular Season III - Red Sox trade Rafael Devers to Giants in stunning blockbuster

I get he had attitude problems, but holy shit that is a horrendous return for a perennial all-star hitter. It's not even like he was down either. Bounced right back from that historically awful start he had to just under 900 OPS

Kyle Harrison is a prospect with good stuff but hasn't been able to put it together yet at the major league level. Jordan Hicks has been pretty bad ever since he converted to a starter. This actually might be worse than the Mookie deal on paper because at least Verdugo was highly touted.

I would be willing to wager the Sox are using the "attitude" as a replacement for "actually we don't want to pay him the contract we signed him to"

Sox being the Sox. Failures as usual lately. Another brutal trade regardless of value.

Can only hope the ratings continue plummeting. Betts and Devers. Legitimate fools running the Sox. If they never win another game under this ownership it would be beautiful poetry.

I refuse to believe they couldn't have gotten more value. There's no one else in the majors that wanted a slugging 3B who's biggest issue was being able to play the position he's natural at?

Makes even less sense given the Matt Chapman is the Giants locked in 3B. Unless his injury is much more severe than we're aware of.

Lmao - the organization basically told him that they only wanted him to DH. Injuries roll around and they change their tune. Good, f*** them. The last time they traded away a superstar they looked like f***ing clowns.....this will be no different. Henry is thrilled to have all this money off the books. It's going to do wonders for his pocket.
Disagree 100%. It's not like the team asked him to pick up a glove and play a position he's never played before.

Raffy put himself above the team, FAFO.

We knew it wasn't good when Henry flys out to KC to try and convince him.

wait until Jaylen Brown goes to San Antonio for 2 OA lol
That one at least has legitimate financial constraints behind it. The Celtics threw everything they had at the window they were given and won a championship. Now they gotta seriously trim the fat. Everyone knew this would happen.

This move on the other hand...

Much worse than Mookie. Mookie was a UFA in his walk year and we got two pretty solid MLB players in that deal.

Devers is under contract for another decade and you got Jack shit back.

FSG paid him over Mookie and then shipped him out a few years later. I get your team has won 4 World Series this century, though Id be so annoyed with this.

If he agreed and was a team player and moved to 1B he’s not traded

Really simplistic

To bad he reminded me of the 1970-70 Pirates hitters

Tibbs was the 13th pick last year and Harrison has top of the rotation potential (was ranked as high as 18th best prospect in baseball) and is figuring things out at the major league level. I think they’ll make Hicks a reliever again- at least they should. The Bello kid is dominating in rookie ball right now but i doubt he’s much.

Truly a shocking trade. I think it means they’re very serious about keeping Bregman around long term.

They basically have to give Bregman a blank check at this point after he opts out.

I am glad they got out of that contract. Devers is a DH and I assume that's part of why the Sox traded him, not only because of his recent antics. The Giants may think that Raffy can be an adequate 3B and they may get by it, but I have seen the Sox IF-defense for so many years that I don't believe it anymore. He played a huge part of why the team was so bad for many years.

Sorry, don't want such a contract - especially the term - holding them back in the long run when the young guns need to be extended and they are running out of money. Trading Devers also gets them out of the luxury tax and starts the clock a year later. I think that's not insignificant since they obviously won't spend up to LA or NY levels.

I am also somewhat fine with the return. Give me a top young and highly touted pitching prospect. If Harrison was having success in the majors already, he wouldn't have been available at all.

Someone on twitter wrote that in retrospect, you've got to wonder if Devers requested a trade during that meeting in Kansas City that no one wanted to talk about afterwards.

I’m never, ever against trading a guy who isn’t a great temmate regardless of talent…..

But I know noting about what they got in return.

Is it worth it?
Harrison's interesting. He was a Top 20 prospect at one point, and he's got good stuff, but he really hasn't put it all together at the Major League level yet. If things start to click, he's probably got #2 starter talent.

Hicks also has good stuff, but throughout his career, he's been better coming out of the bullpen. He's also got like two and a half more years on a deal that pays him roughly $12.5 million/year. He's currently a back end of the rotation starter based on results.

Tibbs was the 13th pick in the draft last year. Left-handed hitting corner OF/1B type with some pop. Pretty decent bet to reach the majors.

Know very little about Bello, but Fangraphs had him ranked as the Giants' 22nd prospect and wrote this about him:

Dominant in his second DSL season, the Giants promoted Bello to Arizona for one start in late July; in total, he struck out 38 and walked five across 27.2 innings. Bello has a starter’s mix with three potentially average or better pitches, the best of which is his 82-85 mph, two-planed slider. Bello has a quick arm and throws strikes despite having a long arm action. His release’s inconsistency manifests more in the variable movement of his pitches. Some of his fastballs cut a little bit while others tail, and Bello throws his fair share of non-competitive changeups, but the cambio also flashes bat-missing action. Though a tad undersized, Bello is a good athlete and fine developmental prospect whose realistic outcome is that of a backend starter.
