GDT: 2025 Playoffs - Conference Finals

It doesn't seem like that's a big priority for him. He chose the childish option in 2018 and I doubt much has changed.
Difference is in 2018 Leafs were a legit cup contender for the foreseeable future, if Marner leaves I am guessing they are going to lose that, Tavares is going to want a cup on his otherwise lackluster resume

Going to Toronto hurt him in a lot of ways, at least on paper.

The narrative when he was with the Islanders was that he was dragging this team to the playoffs and the supporting cast wasn't good enough. He needed more talented players to have more success.
Yeah, but where did that narrative originate from? I'm guessing fans and the media, who together have the collective brain power of a hat rack.

He'll likely score 60+ points for the next couple of years. He'll get a good contract from someone. I could see a Columbus or a Calgary being interested if he doesn't take a big cut to stay in Toronto, which he might. He won't get an $11m dollar contract, but he wasn't going to get that at 34 anyway. He was always going to get the bulk of his money on that 27-34 contract and that's what he did.

Looking back at his 7 year contract really is incredible. 0 conference championship appearances, 5 game 7's where they lost and scored only one goal each. Now next season he would still be making 12 mill/year if he were with us but 12 mill is probably the most hell get total in 3 years if he re-signs with toronto now.

I am not sure. JT based on his post-game comments seems like he wants to stay...

but we know what that kind of promise is worth :sarcasm:

I'll be very surprised if Tavares doesn't stay in TOR - unless the team doesn't want him, which seems doubtful. He's got $120M in career earnings., so he's in a position to take a team friendly deal. And the way he plays he could be a 3C and still be effective, so not much risk for TOR either.

I really hope he doesn't win a cup next year because if he doesn't you know he will have deep regrets about not re-signing on the Isles, between the money he left on the table and the legacy he could have left on the Islanders even if he didn't win a cup here

It's true. He would've been considered one of the all-time greats on this team. But if he doesn't win on Toronto, his legacy will be for being known as the reason they didn't win.

Imagine this:

John Tavares signs with the Islanders.

Opening night the lights go out.

Ozzy Osbourne plays Mama I'm Coming Home.

"Ladies and Gentlemen now introducing your former captain JOHN TAAAAAAVVVVVAAAAARREEESSSS."

His signing in retrospect really seems like it put the leafs in an awful spot. At the time, they had a young team of superstars and really just needed to use the rest of their cap to shore up depth, maybe sign some good D, and be on their way to contention.

Instead, His signing happened and they tied up a ton of money on forwards. It set the bar for high salary signings for the rest of their core forward players who demanded top-dollar and they proceeded to overpay. His signing also handicapped their ability to get help on D and in net which they desperately needed (been better in both departments last year or two finally, but still not great).

If they would have stayed the course and built around those core guys instead of doing something drastic, i bet they would have had far more success. Too much young talent there

How many teams are there in the NHL again? And Tavares is going to sign here? I'm thinking the little homecoming party we had for him might've stuck in his craw a little bit. Just a hunch.

Not without him laying himself out prostate begging for forgiveness.

A nice team friendly contract is forgiveness enough. lol

Not that I expect that but yeah it would be easy enough to forgive the prodigal son if he gave us something like 2 years @ 5M.

You’re more compassionate than I am. He took his best years to Toronto. Now he can pound sand.
1000%. Persona non grata. And I’m a guy who stopped booing every time he touched the puck 4 years ago. That shit is just stupid at this point.

But I still wouldn’t take JT back if he played for free and donated $10m to the local children’s hospital. Go eat a hot bag of dicks, you diseased roast beef sandwich.

See here's the thing with me. For now? Let's get JT back In the blue and orange baby.

If he goes back to Toronto? I'd spit in his f***ing face and go back to booing him. f***ing loser.

As long as his wife "Aryne" is happy and he can afford all of his health and wellness "amulets", I don't think he actually cares about winning at all.

He's made over 100M in his career. Even with a f*** ton of taxes, he could retire this summer and ride off into the sunset with plenty of dough at the age of 34 with his health and be a father to his kids "Jace", "Axton", and "Rae".

I don't know why I put his children's' names in quotations, those are actually their real names...

This guy is a total squid, if he grew up on Long Island he probably would have been an Herbalife salesman while "Aryne" would be driving around in the pink Cadillac selling Mary Kay.
