HF Habs: 2025 NHL Draft: Part II

I think he has gone up in the final ranking.
34th!! Dang, that's a raise. I totally missed him and do not know much about. Well, 2nd-3rd rounder it is ... Dobber scoring let me think that he is a real long shot project and not a sure shot.

100% agree. I'd say it's the last rebuild draft but with seven top 100 picks we have a pretty decent draft power and we should use it to fill the prospects pool and after that we should move on from rebuilding.
I agree too, it is our last draft before trying to go up in the standings. I wonder if we can manage a great trade with one vet to get a bonafide kid. (Matheson?)

A #1 D usually has more value than #1 center.

True, but it seems like a crapshoot whether D picked at 1 overall actually will turn into those stud, Norris-caliber dmen or not. Like, if you were to compare success rates I'd take the center.

2021 - Owen Power, jury's still out but not looking great
2018 - Rasmus Dahlin - he fits the bill
2014 - Aaron Ekblad - Decent career, but doesn't fit the bill
2006 - Erik Johnson - Decent career, but doesn't fit the bill
1996 - Chris Phillips

Ekblad fit the bill. Maybe I am watching different hockey than you but Ekblad game shine a lot in the playoff and I doubt Florida would be as dominant without him back there.

I mean, I mentioned that he had a solid career, which is true. He was derailed by injuries. I mean, how many of these 1 drafted centers would you take him over?

Celebrini
Bedard
Hughes
Hischier
Matthews
McDavid
Mackinnon
RNH
Tavares
Stamkos
etc.

The correct way to make this point would be to argue if you would take the consensus #1C in each of those drafts over the defencemen picked.

Power or Beniers = jury is still out
Dahlin or Kotkaniemi = obvious answer
Ekblad or Reinhart = Not so sure (Drai was 3rd overall)
Erik Johnson or Jordan Staal = Pretty close (Toews went 3rd)
Chris Phillips or Boyd Deveraux = Phillips (holy shit what a garbage draft outside of Chara, Briere and Sturm)

on the prospect board, a poster is saying Mason West is down to 2 NCAA schools, Michigan State or BC, he has 1 more year left before he finishes high school from what I have heard. Poehling opted to accelerate his last year of HS so he could join his brothers but no clue if that's even on the table for West.

Haven't dug into draft eligibles a ton so far this season but a few players I think are interesting in the mid-1st: Aitcheson, Bear, Lakovic, Cootes, Ryabkin. Spence to a lesser degree cuz I don't think there's a ton of upside but I think he's a future NHL role player at the least.

I would also fully support trading up to land Brady Martin. He's got middle 6 terror written all over him. The Habs need depth and he's the kind of player that plays a massive role when it matters. Same reason 50-point Sam Bennett is going to break someone's bank only July 1st.
I'm gonna add Zonnon to this list. Local kid, plays hard, plays smart, plays C and W, does things the right way. Gamer. The more I see, I think he's being underrated cuz the Q is kinda trash.

You should probably also look at the D who were in the mix for going 1st OA even if they ultimitetly weren't taken there. So guys like Hedman, was it the right decision to go Tavares over him? Or Stamkos vs Doughty or Bouwmeester vs Nash, etc...

My feeling is that D are generally harder to project and there are more mistakes made with them at the top of the draft then there are with F. But at the end of the day it's always a case by case basis.

I’ll add that the likelihood of drafting a number 1 D later on in the draft is higher than for a 1C.

Just goes to show that 17-18 years old Dmen are hard to project.

Desnoyers with wrist issues and won’t participate in any of the combine testing. Wrists can be worse than herniated disks, very tough to recover from and be the same player.

Definitely no longer a Top 15 pick :sarcasm:
you think we got a shot to pick him iwith our 16th?

I like him but footspeed is the issue that could hold him back. Habs need this kind of character in the lineup but Habs also need a lot more speed in the organization.
