Agreed. My approach to healthcare here is to hope to not need it. Because its a mess. Hopefully some of the changes in AHC here will make it better. Been a long time since our Healthcare system was a model for others.

At one time long ago Alberta was ahead of the healthcare curve.

Happy retirement! I love it. Known some people in San Diego as well but pretty pricey place. Most snowbirds seem to choose Arizona for affordability. I doubt I end up moving or getting a property somewhere else but you never know.
San Diego is gorgeous but hellishly expensive. Arizona most places are too toxic.

So the city finally cleared my neighborhood street overnight. Good for a day. Just in time for a bunch more snowfall.
Ours done today as well. Along with the two foot high berms created and some of it onto previously shoveled sidewalks. This a day after the city exorts property owners to keep sidewalks clear, they dump chunks of what they graded over sidewalks. This is the service we pay incredibly for.

What do you mean toxic? Had a place down there for 15 years and it was great, most people were super nice.
Not sure if it was about the people statement.

Many areas in Phoenix and Arizona are toxic due to previous mines and operations, tailings, and other contamination etc. What was once a dumping ground of out of state problems is now a populated state itself.

So many toxic sites and so little disclosure about them typically. This gives some info regionally on Maricopa county.

Further NPL seems to constantly downplay severity of pollutants contaminants in its Superfund monitored areas. It seems the entity exists to prolong matters and contest matters that are before the courts. In many jurisdictions this going for 50yrs.

Heres a wider breakdown of Arizona contaminated "Superfund" cites and locations.

edit. whoops...

I owned a place in Mesa during and after the 2020 election.

'Nuff said.

To each their own I suppose. Had a great time in Phoenix and love Arizona, the place has awesome scenery, tons to do, and other than 1 crazy guy never had a problem. Desert Ridge up by the JW is an awesome area.

Every city has their environmental catastrophe areas, look at Calgary where they wanted to build their first arena. Our toxic area currently resides in City Hall.

Been to every corner of Arizona and most points in between, on horseback, ATV, 4 x 4, a bit of hiking, boating (they have a couple of fantastic lakes near the valley), tons of sightseeing, out to the giant meteor crater, out to Tombstone, Grand Canyon, the desert, the mountains, all over the valley. Love it.

I agree about the awesome areas, from the canyon down to Montezuma down to Tucson.

If you can dismiss all the lies, corruption, threats and intimidation from the Lake era as "1 crazy guy" then you obviously haven't lived in Arizona.

By 1 crazy guy I mean the crazy guy in the condo below us who was literally crazy and lived with his elderly father. But otherwise it was a great 15 years.

We sold in 2016 and enjoy visiting when we go back but haven’t been down there for a few years now.

The Lake area is great, we were only 20 minutes from Lake Pleasant’s east side (if you drive fast lol) but preferred the west side. Saguaro and Canyon Lakes are great. The road to Theodore Roosevelt Lake is insane. My dad just about drove over the cliff, scared the shit outta me.

Never lived up in the Lake area there so don’t know it’s politics. I thought you said you lived in Mesa?

And it's only going to get worse over the next 4 years.

And all the fantastic scenery in the world won't make up for the cost of surgery down there. We sold our retirement place and moved back where we belong.

We go to Hawaii now for our winter getaway but only for 3-4 weeks. Mrs5 wants to be near water and it’s warmer in winter.

If your full time snowbirding then you need some sort of medical insurance or a very large bank account.

Wow, you gotta spell it out for some guys.

I don’t follow US politics for gawdsakes and all politicians of every stripe are corrupt c**nts. Look at our current Federal Government as Examples A thru Z.

I guess if you let that run your show you’ll never be happy anywhere.

We are going down to Bucarias for the 2nd winter in a row, and staying for 2 months this time in a beautiful new condo. About 20 minutes out of Puerto Vallarta - think Sherwood Park or St. Albert compared to Edmonton type of thing. Really great place with nice folks and we're only a short 10 minute walk from the entertainment area - think Whyte Avenue type of thing without the thugs (lol). Pretty much every day is nice (about 80) and no sweaters required like you need in January/February in the desert. Good way to avoid the U.S. dollar exchange rate and the climbing expenses of Phoenix or Palm.

Read the news?

Setting the facts straight.

Lake is not the governor, never has been the governor. She lost that 2022 election. Oh and she also lost the the 2024 senatorial race in November. She is a wack job that even the GOP wants zero to do with nor do the Repub voters. Trump handily won AZ but this MAGA acolyte couldn’t seal the deal with no incumbent for the senator seat because she’s certifiable.

But to be clear, she has never held elected office in AZ, has never been the Gov.

Not a fan at all of desert terrain and climate. Some people love it. Can't stand arid places and even Medicine Hat, Kamloops, can't wait to get out of those places. Calgary too and much of Southern Alberta, grasslands environments. Couldn't live there. Give me boreal forest anytime. For me the wonder is going to forested or mountain areas.

Grand Canyon would interest me but I prefer something like Waimea Canyon in Kauai, love hiking all of that area, or our own Canyons in the rockies.

I like all wilderness except frozen tundra lol. One can find beauty anywhere in nature. The desert has some beautiful areas and if I were to take you to the pine forests of Arizona youd never even know you were in an arid environment. The area around Prescott and Flagstaff has gorgeous forests. Waimea Canyon is great too, very different. The very end of the canyon on the north shore is the wettest place on Earth apparently. Was pretty cool when we went a couple of years ago.

I guess if you let what is called "news" these days run your life you will get scared of your own shadow.

The news is as certifiable as whoever this Lake person is/was/wants to be.

The way the news writes headlines, 19 Saudi nationals died in a tragic plane accidents on Sept 11....

Take me to Montana or Idaho instead. heh Can't stand heat either.

I appreciate the bolded sentiment. But I certainly have my favorites and Alberta and BC have a lot of them.

You're probably right though. Could be some things I'd like in Arizona. But not the desert please. heh.

From a nature POV Kauai is probably the most gorgeous place we've been away from Western Canada. Really loved our time there. We're hikers so its like a mecca there.

It is a lot cooler in the higher elevations of Arizona, mostly in the north and northwest of the state. Like I said the pine forests there are awesome and not near as hot as in the Sonoran Desert. Hiking around Lake Pleasant in spring (never in summer!) it is 22 degrees and just fantastic, and the desert environment has its own rugged beauty. Taken many friends there who had no idea and left loving it. After a spring rain the desert blooms are amazing.

But I love Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Northern California, the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, etc etc. Been very fortunate to have been able to travel lot in this life, lots of places been fortunate enough to have experienced. BC and Alberta too of course!

Trust me I despise even the Okanagan. Can't stand the place. I wouldn't be into any desert environment. Tried it and still don't care for them. The forest sound nice enough but we have some of the best here. Not much of a lake person. I seem to be in the ideal place for me in Alberta. heh. If I had to be elsewhere maybe Norway, Finland, Sweden. I like the North, all about the North. heh.

One of the reasons Calgary sucks so much to me is being located in sem-arid region. Can't stand the look of that. Give me Edmonton or Rockies or foothills or Northern Alberta anytime. I'm a gardener with a passion for that too so not much desert would offer me.

Love all the other places you mentioned.
