Montgomery had 7 carries in the game. Was he as productive as Gibbs? No, but he had missed the end of the season, as you said, and this was his first game back.We couldn't stop Gibbs, and they stopped giving him the ball. They finished the year without Montgomery, so it doesn't matter what the run game was predicated on, you're 2 games away from the Super Bowl, your RB is averaging over 7 yards a carry, and you stopped feeding him the rock.
During the season those two averaged 25.6 carries per game. They had 21 carries in this game and were playing from behind for a reasonable amount of time, which I don’t believe was all that common for them during the season, so running it 4.6 fewer times than average doesn’t surprise me since regardless of how well you are running the ball, you are still chewing up more clock that way.
But sure, if someone is averaging 7.5 yards a carry on more than just a couple runs, asking why he didn’t get more is a logical question.
