he wasnt terrible, the 4th inning was a bit unlucky with a couple weird plays not made, a walk, a hit batter, but yeah the homer was a meatball. but by that point the game was out of reach anyway with how the offense was going.

it was about to be a shutout when they decided to string a few hits together in the 9th with 2 outs and scored a couple runs.

He had a few decent innings and then was mostly undone by a couple of bad ones (which was really 1 bad one mildly compounded by a phantom HBP and an error by Kiermaier when he ran into Varsho because he wouldn't pull up, and then one terrible pitch to Carpenter in the next inning)

I won't lie and say he was great but he was OK in places with like one inning's worth of implosion.

If we're looking at him to be the #5 in this rotation it's an "acceptable" downside start for a #5 guy. It only becomes a problem if it begins to be the norm again.

Before anyone gets upset at Jano not being in the lineup today, just remember that as of now Jano is starting 2 out of every 3 at catcher. If he stayed healthy for 162 games of this workload, he would play 108 games which would be a career high.

I'm not even sure he can stay healthy with the current workload they're giving him based on that.

If our baseline is "just be a workable #5 starter" then him having one of those starts once out of every 5 starts is probably more optimistic than is entirely necessary.

So far this season Manoah has a 3.97 ERA, though that comes with the caveat that he's dramatically outperforming his 5.56 FIP.

According to this post from Reddit last year, the average 5th starter in an MLB rotation (sorting pitchers into boxes by ranking them by WAR on their respective teams. Not the greatest method but it does the job well enough for our purposes with a minimum of fuss) the average #5 pitched to about a 4.79 ERA in 2022.

If that's our yardstick for what to expect out of a #5 starter Manoah is doing reasonably well so far and he could be almost a full run worse than he is and still be no worse than the average #5 across the league. Of course, said average #5 doesn't usually have a run and a half lead on their FIP so there's that risk...

I feel so bad for our pitchers. Berrios only allows 2 runs but takes the loss. Turner batting 2nd hitting 3 for 42 there is mindbogglingly stupid managing for frankly a stupid manager.
