Patriots/NFL 2024 Regular Season: Part II - If the NFL season ended today, the Patriots would have the No. 1 pick in the draft

So here's my rough thoughts on the Mayo thing:

It's all about Maye and what's best for him. I think back to Mac Jones. I'm not sure we were all convinced he was the guy, but the stats certainly suggested he could be. And then everything fell apart. Part of it was his fault, but part of it was screwing up his development with coaching.

It's incredibly easy to cause irreparable harm with young QBs if not treated correctly. I think many of us believe Maye is the guy, so every decision they make should not only be about supporting him, but also ensuring anything bad stays far away from him.

It's a tough decision. I can't say I'm happy with what AVP has done this year, but I don't think Maye's promising play is solely due to his own talent, and someone deserves credit for that, whether it's AVP, McCartney, or McAdoo. Changing offensive coordinators can be damaging to a QB, so they certainly need to be careful of that.

What it really comes down to is the only reason to keep Mayo is if you think it will benefit Maye. You can't be worried about how firing him might damage the team's reputation. If you're an NFL head coach, your biggest concern should be finding a QB and many of us think they've done that. Maye's presence should negate any reputation concerns. We know coaches have huge egos, and I think many of them would be convinced they could do amazing things with Maye.

If the team was smart, and well-run, they'd backchannel a coaching search now to see if there's interest from top candidates, but, unfortunately, I think the last year has suggested we can no longer consider this a well-run organization from the ownership level. The fact that we're likely reliant on Jonathan, who most of us have been scared shitless of taking over for years now, is disheartening.

Having the number 1 pick would actually be awesome.

Now what I fully expect to happen is for Sanders to declare he’ll only play for the giants and f*** us over cause nobody wants Cam Ward first overall

If the Patriots stay at #1 is anyone else worried Sanders pulls and Eli and says he'll only play for the Giants? Would teams still try and trade up to #1 for Hunter or Ward?

All depends on whether or not teams feel that there’s an appreciable difference between Sanders and Ward. Personally, I don’t think that there is.

If Pats fans are expecting to get a return like Chicago did for their #1 from Carolina, they’re gonna be disappointed.

Sam Darnold is gonna get paid this summer. He’s looked really good today, dissecting GBs defense.

He’s gonna be a Raider if Minnesota doesn’t decide to re-sign him.

It depends on who they're trading with. Carolina moved up from #9 to #1. That's why it cost as much as it did. I don't think it would be crazy to get a 2026 1st + 2025 2nd + 2025 3rd or 2026 2nd

They could win and theoretically still end up with the #1 spot if the Browns, Titans and Giants all win as well due to strength of schedule tiebreak.

A loss though secures the 1st overall, so um...

Go Bills?

If Kraft has an ounce of football acumen left and cares about winning at all he'll clear house and be willing to spend. It won't be like last year. Last year they had no QB and your head coach would be taking over for the GOAT. This time the HC is taking over from the worst coach in the league. You literally can't do worse. A GM would be coming in with QB set AND the #1 pick and a ton of space to spend. And again you literally can't do worse than the last guy. The roster is tough but you can overhaul it. These are appealing positions.

Should be looking at Lions OC if he is available.

All you gotta do is compare how Washington improved this year vs New England. That’ll tell you all you need to know about what needs to be done.

Washington picked 2nd last year and is now going to the playoffs. NE picked 3rd, got worse, in the weakest division in the NFL, and their fans are high fiving about getting the #1 pick…and BOTH teams got themselves really good QBs.

Washington also has a shit ton of cap space. If you’re Tee Higgins, which team is more appealing?
