$5.5M is a good cap hit, I don't love the term but that's how it goes in UFA.

Glad to see we are finally a destination for prime UFAs. Shows that players around the league know that we're close to perennial contention.

sometimes I look at these contracts and I'm like "what's the difference between 6.0 and 6.125" and then i realize that .125 is enough to feed and raise a family of 4 in a small town and then I get really sad about the horrors of late stage capitalism and then I start drinking and my boss yells at me but it's his fault i'm sad because my bonus was only .010 when I was expecting .0175 so now I can't afford my kid's .0004 daycare because I lost .002 on the Yankees moneyline on saturday.

I'd rather 5 years @ 6.1 than 6 years @ 5.5, but this will give us a bit more wiggle room in the short term.

If the cap rises the way we all think it's going to rise then that 6th year should be a huge issue.

I’d take the lower hit now (depending on trade protections). We’re going to be really tight up against the cap this year and we need a lot of depth help. Every dollar matters. As long as the protections aren’t crazy you could dump him at the end of the deal.

It's the typical "front half should be good, back half is questionable/bad" type deal most free agents around his age get.

Right, 5 years with higher AAV is probably a "better" deal on paper, but for where we are as a franchise this makes more sense.
