Not exactly sure when it changes if it's like 7 am on the 7th or 00:01 on the 7th but at some point on that day the roster limit disappears.

But now Sanheim has trade protection. It could happen, just unlikely. Not that I wouldn't love to get him.

That's not the question though. What about acquiring a player on TD day putting you at 24 on the roster? I'm sure I see it happen every year.
 
“There may be a maximum of 23 players on each Club's playing roster at any one time from the commencement of the NHL regular season through the trade deadline.“
I take this as roster limits change either at 3pm when the deadline ends, or the day after the deadline, as it says through the deadline.
Roster sizes are unlimited after the deadline, but salary cap is still in effect through the last day of the regular season. Once playoffs commence, there is no longer a salary cap restriction.

Ya, I think if Chevy trades for someone, a player must be waived.

Technically the TDL should be called the PRDL…Playoff Roster Deadline..as trades can still happen after the deadline, but only players on a teams active roster by the end of the deadline, can play for that team in that years playoffs. Any players acquired after the deadline are not eligible for playoffs duties.

I feel like I have gone insane, teams make trades constantly with 23 man rosters on deadline day without waiving but the rules clearly state it's not till after midnight on the day of and there is nothing else in the rule book saying anything else on this matter.

So either teams do waive and I am misremembering or there is another rule in there that allows this on the day.

The cap is not the question, though I suppose that could come up too.

When a team acquires a player who puts their roster at 24, how is that managed? Maybe it is some delay in the league registering the deal, IDK. But I know it happens. Actually, I noticed a team at 24 for just one day a few weeks ago. Maybe I missed a player on IR at that time. But on TD day there always appears to be one or more teams that temporarily exceed the limit. They acquire a player at the TD and the roster limitation doesn't come off until the next day.

I can guess at some [possibilities, but I don't know the answer.

Good on PuckPedia. They appear to be the only ones who have it right. :laugh:

If I remember correctly, there are limits on recalls (callups), I think it’s 4 regular allowed…But sending a player down when there’s no roster limit doesn't make sense, unless you really have cap problems.

“Regular recalls exclude instances when a team needs a skater or goalie due to injury. Teams can still bring up a player by exercising an emergency recall when an NHL club's roster has fewer than two goalies, six defensemen and 12 forwards healthy. The player will have to be returned promptly after the game, but they can be recalled again in time for the next game.”

“There were also paper transactions at the trade deadline, where teams assign players to the AHL to be eligible for that league for the rest of the season and playoffs. NHL clubs quickly recall many of those players after the 3 p.m. ET deadline. These count against the 4 regular recalls”

Maybe they have players that can be sent down that don't need waivers and then they call them back up the next day?
 
I wonder if Lou signs Nelson and then puts Horvat on the market. Lou wasn’t happy signing Horvat to his deal saying it was too much, and in Lou’s defense it is a million or so too much for his production.

Horvat could be a perfect addition by Jets for 2C if he comes available. He has trade protection so there’s that.
