2024-25 James Norris Memorial Trophy finalists: Quinn Hughes, Cale Makar, Zach Werenski

NHL players think Makar is the best dman in the league.
Yes they do. And it’s quite obvious he is. I know a lot of people hate Makar for some reason and can’t admit he’s the best in the game due to jealousy or just hatred towards the Avs but it’s easy to see he’s the best dman in the game

It would be a complete honor to have my opponents/teammates think I’m the best in the game. Like how he’s nominated for the Lindsay and is the only dman

Once Hughes consistently makes the playoffs people will start to learn.
Just too much screen time given to Werenski and Makar year after year when more eyes are watching.
Playoffs definitely skew how folks watch the following seasons
Hughes just won the Norris and was nominated the subsequent year. I think folks are watching and noticing quite fine.

I could see him being around the same probably 5-8 range

If he can have this same season it shows consistency

I think Dahlin was still really good last year but his offense suffered a bit from the team around him (though this applies to Hughes too and he still produced this year). Buffalo showing some improvement would go a long way too. Hughes and Werenski missed the playoffs but Columbus was in and out all year and the Canucks only really fell out late. I think it’s easier for voters to blame players for lack of team success when it comes to awards.

But in regards to winning this award or being a finalist
Dahlin needs to have 22/23 and 24/25 in successive seasons.

Their opinion matters given they play against or with each of these defenseman.
This thread is about nominees for the Norris Trophy, so no it doesn't. The opinions of the media matter, not players.

Voting members of the Norris also thinks Makar is the best in the league.
Well shit I didn't realize you knew the voting tabulation already, my bad!

Maybe try not to state your predictions as if they are fact. Sure, maybe he will win, but we don't know yet.

I agree media matter for actual votes and players have no bearing on that, but it useful to know if aligns with what the players think (even if it is a sampling).

Makar scored 30 and people act like it's pedestrian, I don't see how its Werenski or Hughes to be honest.

It wont be. Makar could honestly win unanimously quite frankly. His season was just clearly so far ahead of the others.

Nothing against Werenski either, I think he's a great Dman and should easily get 2nd as well. But ya Makar just had a ridiculous season.

Weresnski may not be the sexy pick, but the man had 82 points, lead his team and scoring and finished in the plus and played 81 games. With that supporting cast. He doesn't have what Makar has to play with.

I get it 30 goals for a d-man is pretty hard to ignore. But Werenski probably deserves it the most. He was a rock for the Blue jackets. It's like comparing all arounder Bourque to a young 102 point Leetch.

If had to rank it would be Werenski, Hughes and Makar 3rd. But all 3 are worthy winners.

But Werenski probably deserves it the most

I still have a hard time understanding why so many people feel like the best player on a worse team deserves anything more than someone that outperformed them by all measureable means.

It's incredibly underappreciated how much being a star on a bad team gives you great opportunities to score. You get the best minutes with the best players the team has. Columbus' top line scored 188 points, the Avs scored 225 points. It's not like they scored 300 points and assists were being given out like candy. Look at Karlsson over the years, he put up his best numbers each season he was the only defender on a bad club, eating the best minutes.

Meanwhile you've got Makar as the better defender, scoring more points overall and more goals, but Werenski deserves it more?

Quinn hughes was an absolute superstar in the playoff games i watched last spring.

Its just sad that people can’t appreciate great players because of fandom and pride

I'm surprised by how many people think that Makar might not get the trophy. Pretty much all the media discussing this vote I've seen or heard are all in on Makar, and they love an easy story like 30 goals. You might think that someone else should get it, but it's obvious who is going to get it.

[should have thrown an emoji on this I guess]

They did not make the playoffs and they did not score 100 points or 30 goals. There is no reason to give it to anyone else but Makar. He had the best season and deserves it.

There are two defenders scoring 30 goals or more in the cap era.

He outscored every other defender with 10 points or more and had the highest +/- among defenders.

This is a very easy choice.

Makar takes it and it probably won't be a close vote. 30 goals plus his reputation as the best d-man in the league is gonna be basically impossible to overcome.
