Didn't see this posted. Latest poll of 663 players is out: NHLPA Player Poll 2024-25

Relevant Results:

Best Overall Goalie: Vasilevskiy
Best Overall Forward: McDavid
Best Overall Defenseman: Makar
Most Complete Player: Crosby
Best Playmaker: Kucherov
Best Faceoff Man: Crosby
Smartest Overall Player: Crosby
Best Overall Skater: McDavid
Best Ice: Montreal

Also a decent chunk of players voted they'd like to see either PP's end with a shorty, or the 3-2-1 point system adopted.

So much to dissect here!

- Players think the Jets is a team thing and not a goalie thing. Slim chance he wins the Lindsay now
- McDavid landslide forward. Players still see him as the measuring stick and Draisaitl not in the top 5. Again, similarly shows where the Lindsay is not going this season, at least to Leon. Could McDavid lose the Hart, but win the Lindsay still? My guess is for Kuch.
- Makar dominating. No shock there.
- Crosby getting so much respect still. Good to see. Same with Barkov and Kopitar.
- Kuch gettng the playmaker vote over McDavid was a shocker.
- Cool rule change with SH ending the other teams PP. I dig it.

I don't think kuch getting playmaker over mcdavid is a big shocker at all, he's ridiculous. Also if Quinn Hughes didnt get injured before 4 nations he was trending to win the Norris again. Hughes bros aren't very durable though unfortunately.

I dont think that is true outside of Cancuks fans opinions.

January had Makar dominating

March had Werenski slightly ahead with Hughes a distant third.

And obviously with Makar since hitting 30 goals, it will be Makar in a landslide. Werenski will likely get a lot of Hart 4-5th place votes though which he deserves.

I said before his injury just before 4 nations. He was ahead of Makar in points or tied but with 10 less games played. Then he was out for quite awhile and hasnt been the same unfortunately. Lots of injuries this season but that's the way she goes.

I get it, but I dont see the ground covered then between 1.12.25 and 2.12.25 (4 nations break) or more specifically 1.12.25 to 1.31.25 (Quinns last game before injury).

So between 1.12.25 Makar went from, in this example, 13 first place votes to Quinn overtaking him? 9 games where Quinn 5 goals and 7 assists. Cale in the same stretch had 6 goals and 2 assists in 9 games.

IMO the voters never saw Quinn as a clear favorite despite the points. Werenski had it for a mnute, but lost it.

Not a lot of shockers there honestly. Pretty good and reasonable list.

The voters are simple people. Makar hitting 30 goals is all they really care about even though Hughes has had a remarkable season under much more difficult circumstances. I mean, Hughes is right there with him in PPG and has only two fewer assists in 13 less games playing on a much worse team. You can't just hand wave that away, even as an Avs fan.

Hughes is great offensively, but a far third in this years voting and Id argue further as an overall defenseman, but this is not the place to start that debate up.

The amount of turnover the Avs have had this season is second to none. It is a big reason Makar was so far ahead in January and a big reason why he will likely win the Norris and get some hart 4th-5th place Hart votes. Also will be why MacKinnon gets Hart 1st place votes.

For sure I guess I shouldn't have brought it up, pointless argument, I didn't realize your were an AVS guy my bad. I was just talking for the Norris cause you originally stated Makar dominated when it was actually very close (maybe not in pa votes), even with Quinn's injuries they're basically the same PPG and he's been noticably off. 1.15 vs 1.13 for Makar. I'm a Jets fan btw I've just seen him play a lot since I live in van

Also Makar has Nate.

Award voters do care about fairly arbitrary milestones. Makar will likely smoke the field this year, but would probably win with a decently lesser share if he finished with 29 goals. The media members like a story. As far as these polls Makar has consistently been way ahead of Hughes. The players do seem to prefer incumbents though.
