Karlsson has to have surgery to fix the "Sullivan hockey" that seemed to be missing, so when he returns he can be highly disappointing.

He's getting a crucial sticktoitivness transfusion. They were hoping an entire Summer of a specialized and highly sophisticated training regimen of trying to break down a brick wall by smashing into it head first over and over again without any discernable effect on the wall would help things but sadly it did not take.

Is there any word combination as unnecessarily repetitive as “disappointing” and “Mike Sullivan hockey” in the same sentence?

At the end of the day, I'm simply bored with watching a team ice entire lines of guys who, at best, are 10 point PK specialists on a mediocre PK. Who cares if Puustinen isn't as good as some hope? He's at least a move away from the stale, boring, ineffectual style of hockey which has been Sullivan's go to since 2018, for reasons.

I don't mind us being bad in order to tank, I don't care if we're not sniffing the playoffs, but man, just play a different style of game for once. If it's not going to make any difference, I'd prefer to watch something more entertaining than 82 games of "guys that remind Mike Sullivan of himself when he was younger and a few over the hill superstars".
Sullivan's obsession with being able to PK over having skill is so laughable considering it's not even that difficult to PK. There's a reason that any 4th line scrub can do it effectively.

At the end of a 82 game season, I'd be willing to bet that a team constructed of skilled players will end up with more points than a team who focuses first on who can PK and battle teams to 0-0 draws.

Ugh. The season hasn't even started yet and I'm already pissed off at how this coach does things. f*** off, Sullivan. And f*** off, FSG, for thinking this guy is a keeper.

It’s hilarious because the PK sucks.

If the PK was good and we were good defensively I’d get the urge to reward those players.

Even then, it makes no sense to ice someone who is only good at the PK but brings nothing at 5on5. PKing isn't difficult to do. You don't need a "specialist" who drags you down at 5on5. Play the best 5on5 roster you have, then worry about which 4 guys you'll PK out of those guys.

Couple things --
1. Points/60 is not a predictive stat. It does not hold true that a player will produce at a similar rate with increased usage. He might. Or he might trail off.
It's more predictive than training camp success is, I'll tell you that.
If a rookie has scoring success relative to minutes, you afford him the chance to consolidate that success in their sophomore season. You find out if he can back it up.
You don't put him in a position to fail in camp just so you have an excuse to cut him, because you prefer worthless PK'er plugs.

Puustinen should be playing in this game today with all the regulars, not cast off with the fodder for inevitable cuts. They need to confirm what they have.
It's bad coaching. Plain and simple.

Jesus Christ, the Penguins still have five preseason games left, including today.

They have games on three straight days. Everyone still in camp will play.

No one is losing an opportunity.

What? Puustinen was supposed to be playing yesterday on a line with O'Connor and Eller. If he makes the team, that's the exact spot he'd be playing in.

Yeah, we're icing a mediocre-at-best PK despite having oodles of "pk specialists".

Anywho, the point to being a 4th liner on the PK isn't that it's some great and noble calling, it's that you're proving you're willing to risk injury for the good of the team by blocking shots and sacrificing yourself for the good of the team, which we don't really do a lot of either.

NHL crew is starting today. Mcg should be playing.
They changed the roster for today after yesterday's game was canceled and they now have games on three straight days in three different cities.

From Haase:
Because of Saturday's travel issues causing that game to be postponed, the Penguins are about to play on three consecutive nights, and five games in six days. It's a lot, and the Penguins have had to adjust their plans for more balance as a result.

"It's more than likely going to impact the game on Tuesday at home, because it's changed a lot," Sullivan said. "We had sketched out some skeleton rosters for all these games, and then the game yesterday gets canceled. Now, all of a sudden, we've got three games in three nights, and we're trying to be selective and do our best to set guys up for success. We might have to have some guys play back-to-back now, for example, which we were trying to avoid, this early in the season. But we'll have to see how that goes. But it's a little bit of a logistical challenge."

The Penguins made an effort to keep the big guns -- Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang, Evgeni Malkin still play in the Hockeyville game here tonight. But others, like Rutger McGroarty, were supposed to play here tonight but instead got moved to other games this week because of the shuffling. Nobody lost opportunities, they just got moved.

How do you know it wasn't gonna be Acciari?
All the line rushes to this point suggest Acciari is ahead of him in the depth chart.

View attachment 910849

This is where Puustinen is at for Sullivan.
Lines literally yesterday --

Penguins' lines and pairings at the skate.

Drew O'Connor - Lars Eller - Valtteri Puustinen
Vasily Ponomarev - Tristan Broz - Rutger McGroarty
Emil Bemstrom - Noel Acciari - Jesse Puljujarvi
Avery Hayes - Corey Andonovski - Jimmy Huntington

Owen Pickering - Jack St. Ivany
Sebastian Aho - Ryan Shea
Ryan Graves - John Ludvig / Mac Hollowell

That first line, by the way, isn't playing today, so it will likely play tomorrow in Detroit.

But Puustinen is getting the shaft.
