I guess I just don't see the point in another team giving up their 2D for Toews who's also a 2D?

A 3 team trade would make more sense, but probably doesn't happen because 3 team trades are damn hard to make work.

Perhaps I erred with shorthand. I meant a 2nd line LHD. In this hypothetical:

Girard - Makar
New 2LHD - Manson
New 3LHD - Malinski

At LHD the Avs spend $7.25 (Toews) + $5M (Girard) + $1M ( Revolving door) = $13.25M

A trade of Toews could result in $5M ( Girard) + $5M (New) + $2.25M ( New) = $12.25M

The latter would leave some pocket change for Malinski, who is an RFA next year. This is similar to the Mikko situation where a clever GM could gain enough assets that the sum would be superior to the single part -- in this case, Toews. I know this is not happening, but I'll vomit if I have to read any more unenlightened scenarios for Mikko to be traded for a haul next month.

I'm just trying to introduce a new controversial take in order to get this thread off the Mikko track. I think @RoyIsALegend is absolutely correct: In August of 2025, Mikko is either signed or he goes UFA.

So is there a possibility of trading Toews for a decent 2LD +, then use the + and a 2026 1st for a good 3LD? Better yet a 3 team trade to get it all done. I really don't want to restart the '$250,000 too much' meme, but Toews is overpaid for what he provides the past 2 years.

I don’t want us to forget that Toews is likely dealing with an injury. I believe early in the season, Bednar said that it’s not going away any time soon (sic).

I get that this year’s results are not as good, but last season Toews put up 50 points, and (even though no one wants to acknowledge it) his defense partner was shitty defensively for chunks of the season.
