The only way a Rantanen trade wouldn't set the team back is if they got back a guy like Brady Tkachuk, or if they had managed to swing a deal for a guy pre-breakout like Necas in the off-season
Sure, but I think even Brady is a downgrade to Rantanen. So you’re relying on the added cap space to significantly improve another roster spot to make up the difference.
That’s not always easy. Especially in UFA where anyone worthwhile is overpaid.

Oh definitely, I'm just talking about an immediate, significant drop off. I think the boat has sailed on trading him for anything that would recoup value

In that case the replacement would be put to first line and needs to have chemistry with Mack. So why bother with this trade when points are already there.

What I really want to see, is the Leafs inking Marner to a 13x8 deal, and then like a week later Rantanen signs for 12x8=96

For what it's worth Mack signed for 14.3% of the cap. Knock 1% off of a Mikko contract and you're at 12.487 assuming the cap only goes up 5% like it's supposed to.

Why 1% off?
Idk, it's somewhat arbitrary. But for everyone says that he shouldn't make as much as Mack, all it takes is 1% less to keep him under the Mack cap. Which I think is a realistic end goal for what the contract ends up at.

Actually I think that's the same % Panarin got as a FA as well. So maybe less arbitrary than I thought.

My personal opinion is they come out of Christmas break and hammer out a deal somewhere in the first couple weeks of January.

Uneducated guess: 8 years, 11.7m NMC
I'll be pretty surprised if that happens. I believe that this will go down to the wire, just like it did with Landeskog and just like it did with Nichushkin with the potential that he just walks as a UFA a distinct possibility (and Avs fans freaking' the f*** out in the process).

I also believe that the Avs are going to load up for the 2025 playoffs. I absolutely LOVED hearing that C-Mac doesn't want to wait to make more improvement to the roster because in the end, when you think about it really doesn't matter.

You wait months until the TDL to get into a bidding war with these other teams for a select few players that everyone seems to want to add to their team and for what? So that MAYBE you can pay a lower price by waiting out these sellers ?

Pay a bit of a higher price NOW, avoid the bidding wars and make sure you get your guy. For me, the TDL is for adding pieces like bottom-6 forwards / bottom pairing d-men and/or specialty/utility players IF the price is right as a 'nice to have' but if it doesn't happen, so be it. It's NOT the time to add Top-6 forwards or Top-4 d-men and make massive changes to your roster - especially in this system - where we see guys take up to 25 to 30 games to come around to playing the way Bednar wants.

If Rantanen takes a million less than Marner, he should fire his agent.
Toronto has their own cap world, that is not connected to the rest of the NHL. William Nylander is making more than Pastrnak, while the deals only kicked in 1 year later of eachother. I think it is entirely plausible, likely even, that if both Rantanen and Marner re-sign with their respective teams, Marner will end up getting the bigger contract.

Yes. We can call Nuke a 50 point player because that is what he is?

[MOD]
Because a lot of people amortize players' scoring rates over a full 82 game season, so they can compare their scoring with players who actually played a full 82 game season. Hence, PPG matters.

If we look at last year, do we look at Lehkonen's 34 total points (in 45 games) and say that he's roughly an equivalent player to Lars Eller (31 points in 82 games)? That would be a really insincere position to take.

The issue with replacing Rants scoring with multiple players is that those players have to also replace the scoring of the other players being pushed off the roster... So you'd need to get like 120+ points coming in to replace Rants
But on the flipside, they can do half the work during the off-season and Ismo will be happy.

No denying that Toronto has had a tendency to overshoot the market for their own players. But contracts are based on the comparison to other contracts. If Marner signs first for 13, Mikko is going to come back and ask for 14, not 12.

Well seriously. I don’t get how that is even a debate.

A player scores this many points in this many games means that is his career PPG.

It’s pretty self explanatory to me

Players have trajectories in their careers. Early in his, Nichushkin wasn't the player he has been over the past 3-4 seasons. So why are we paying attention to it?

In his first 3 seasons in the NHL, Sam Reinhart averaged 46 points per season. In his past 3 seasons, he averaged 81 points per season. Which of those two matters now? When his contract came up this past Summer, guess which of the two he got paid for?

Rantanen arguably had a case for a larger contract already in 2019, and look what happened. Everyone in Toronto at the time were pissed because they thought in no way did Marner deserve to be paid 10.9 when Rantanen got 9.25
