“There are two teams that immediately jump to mind as potential fits: the Colorado Avalanche and Carolina Hurricanes.

The Avalanche were 31st in the NHL in goals against heading into Tuesday’s action. That’s not all on the goaltending, but goaltending sure as heck is a big part of it. There’s no question in my mind the Avs could use an upgrade in goal.

But that opinion is not shared where it matters most: inside the Avs’ front office. League sources suggest the team believes its goaltending will steady itself and is OK sticking with what it has.

And when it comes to starter Alexandar Georgiev, who is in his last year of a $3.4 million contract, you can understand why there is still belief internally. He went toe-to-toe with Connor Hellebuyck and Jake Oettinger last spring in the playoffs and didn’t get outplayed by either. Sure, the Avs ultimately lost to the Stars in the second round, but having covered that series, I sure didn’t think it was because of goaltending.

The other reason I think the Avs don’t currently plan to trade for a goalie (always subject to change between now and March 7) is that they don’t look at the market and see a true difference-maker available — or at least someone who is a clear upgrade on Georgiev. And when it comes to Gibson, they’d also have to worry about the remaining term on the contract, given their always-complicated salary cap situation.”

Lebrun on the Avs and a Gibson trade/Goaltending trade

Only someone as stupid as Cmac would be ok with the worst goaltending in the league. But this is the same moron who thought it was ok to defend the cup with the worst C depth in the league. So it’s not particularly surprising.

CMac knows nothing needs to be done because he could trade for prime Hasek and Bednar would still play Georgiev in front of him.

If there is one guy that COULD know something about a possible Crosby trade to the Avs is maybe BizNasty. He is very good friend with both of them so maybe he heard from Crosby that he would be interested if Pens are out of playoffs and starting a rebuild. Still a big if though.

...and then potentially Gibson ends up no better than George and you have him for this year and 2 more and you just gave up a top prospect.

Thankfully, the Avs would never do that. That's not the value.
You can't just bring up the negative without bringing up the positive.

You could also say potentially Gibson goes back to being a Vezina caliber goaltender for a minimal cap hit for 3 years.

It wouldn't happen regardless, but I'd take the chance to solve the goaltending issue for at least 3 years.

So how about a system that allows teams to just rent their remaining cap space to the highest bidder. Instead of having players, picks or prospects, the commoditie at play is cold hard cash. The receiving team gets to pocket it as revenue, but tht's the thing, it is counted as HRR. So even while paying more to go over the salary cap, you are also increasing the pot of revenue that will be determing the next seasons cap.

Rules woudl have to be in place. Like cap-space rental is one season length maximum. Could have some fun by not allowing folks to sign cap-space rental agreement until after the free agency frenzy, thereby maximizing the number of teams that may need these services and the potential amount each dollar of cap relief could be worth.

That would defeat the whole purpose of the salary cap which is supposed to level the playing field. What you're proposing would simply enable big market teams like NY and Toronto to throw money around the same way they used to.

Take LeBrun's comments with a grain of salt. The Avs are NEVER going to tell a national reporter (or anyone else for that matter) that they are unhappy with ANYONE on their current roster and are looking to make to make a change or that they are actively doing much of anything. What we got from LeBrun was the old 'everything is fine, we're all good' but I don't believe that this is what the true internal dialogue that's going on with the Avs front office right now.

They want George to improve his numbers and level off so that when they do trade him, it won't be as a straight-up camp dump and 'hey maybe, you're going to want to re-sign this guy'.

It's pretty clear that while Georgiev can be a solid goaltender when he is on his game, he can also be atrocious when not and that seems to happen more frequently than not and it takes him a while to get out of his slumps - that's not something a contender can afford to roll the dice on - and they know that.

Personally, i'll be pretty surprised if he's the starter for the playoffs.
Yeah the Avs are tight lipped and aren't going to tell LeBrun what they really think. It would also be unwise to weaken their bargaining position by publicly stating that they're unhappy with Georgiev. The last statement relating to Gibson's caphit and the Avs being mindful of their long-term cap situation is also an important detail, as it essentially tells Anaheim that they'll have to retain quite a bit to bring the Avs to the table.

I understand what you're saying and sure, there is upside as well. I like Gibson more than most and I think there's a rather good chance he'd turn it around playing for the Avs.

I just wouldn't give up Ritchie in order to get him. If you're talking about a 2026 first - then maybe if Gibson stays healthy and has a good season between now and the TDL.

Yes. Easily. But I'm guessing there'd have to be another salary headed the other way, like, Georgiev, maybe even Wood. In which case I'd say HELL YES.

If we are trading a 1st round pick that has trended up and will likely have a very strong showing for Canada at the WJC, I’d expect retention on Gibson and them taking Georgiev.

Ritchie and Georgiev for Gibson(50% retained) is something I could maybe get behind.
