Is Jones even that good that everyone wants him so badly? I mean, he would be an upgrade on Manson and Girard I guess, but is he really that good? I see him as being similar to Nurse, or am I off base here? The cup year Manson was a beast. I wish he could get back being that good. Maybe if he’s 100% he would, but he’s been playing injured all year

Others will answer better, but I see him having the same impact as EJ, might not have the hits. Nothing flashy, just reliable, takes lots of minutes #3 spot, would probably open G to get involved with the offense a bit more.

If I’m Mikko I’m not trying to play the Canes way. They’re close but no cigar every season. Mikko won the chip.
I'm I'm Mikko, I'd start contacting teams in Europe.

If he doesn't want to play the way his team does, he doesn't need to be playing on a team. At least one in the NHL. He can take his bad summer habbits, his smoking darts between periods, and his instability anywhere on god's green earth, as long as it isn't anywhere near mine.

I don't even dislike the guy. He looks like he's going through hell right now. What I can't stand is anyone suggesting he should still be an Avs. You might think I'm being sarcastic... but the fact is, even when Mikko is the only person on the ice, he can't skate 200' without falling over.

If he was half as hungry for a goal in the first five minutes of a game as he is for the last 2 minutes he'd have no issues from me.

He's still solid, but most of the interest is because the next best defenseman known to be on the market is Ristolainen. Slim pickings out there.

Jones isn’t a perfect dman by any stretch. I’ll speak for myself in why I want him. He fits the Avs identity absolutely perfectly. Think of a taller Sam Girard. A guy who can skate well, can move the puck, can eat minutes, can PK, can PP if needed. He’s an all around dman that plays the way the Avs need their dmen to play. And to boot he’s RH which is already rare to begin with and the exact position we need.

He’s quite literally the perfect backup to Makar. Is he a number 1? No, but he can absolutely fill those shoes in case of injuries. He completely re-shapes the top 4 D, and that gives the avs flexibility in the off season. They can choose to keep Manson, or, he’s likely a very valuable physical RHD on the last year of his contract.

The fact that a player like him is available, would likely be willing to waive makes it an extremely rare opportunity.

Well said. To me, everything you just said is the reason why it doesn't matter if C-Mac overpays to get him.

Would love to see Mikko in Europe, but I don't think we can beat a 100M offer with a budget of 2M a year.

Exactly!

We wouldn't be bringing in Jones to play on our top pairing. We'd be bringing him in to play on the second pairing next to Sam Girard who is a hell of a mobile defensemen himself. Jones moving to the Avs would actually lessen his load, while ratcheting up the necessity for consistency.

Like you said, he can eat those minutes and in doing so, he'd be pushing Manson to the 3rd pair for this run. Manson, in playoff mode, on the third pair? If he'd had better luck with health this season, I'd say that's a massive luxury... but honestly, if we don't move Manson down at the deadline, what we are doing is setting up the team for failure. As much as I love Manson, we can't count on him being in the top four for the entire playoff run (if we happen to luck into more than just the first round.)

I believe it was Byram. It's well documented that Avs management knew they were eventually going to lose him as he wanted a shot to try to be a #1D somewhere.

I don't blame management for taking a swing on Byram/Mitts. Mitts had the potential to be a top six center. But they swung and missed big time and the blame falls on them for that. You don't trade a kid like Byram and wiff on the trade without taking a rash of shit.

They would have been better served trying to package Byram and getting a center with more proven experience.

I don't think much was factually documented. There was a lot of after the fact rationalizion/PR that leaked out for why they traded a popular player in Byram though.

In the end a lot of the reasons for trading Byram, whether it's a conversation with a friend about playing together one day, or being behind a 30 year old in the depth chart while you're 22, apply to lots of other players too, but they don't end up being traded. Especially top 5 picks. Teams just hold onto them.

I think the Avs just made a panic trade. Pure and simple. They could have been more patient with Byram and either seen how he rebounded in the playoffs or the following season, or waited for a better player than Mitts to trade him for, but they got pressured into trading for a 2C so bad, they just said f*** it and made the deal.
