NHL 2024- 2025 Out of Town III: Ovi passes Gretzky w/ 895 G

The New York Islanders' playoff hopes are rapidly fading—and on Tuesday coach Patrick Roy provided searing evidence.

Following a 4–1 Islanders loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, Roy laid into veteran left wing Anthony Duclair with eyebrow-raising bluntness.

“He was god-awful,” Roy said. “He had a bad game. That’s why I didn’t play him a lot... He is lucky to be in the lineup. Sorry if I lose it on him right now, but that’s just how I feel."

Roy further accused Duclair, who signed a four-year contract in the offseason, of a lack of effort. On Thursday, Roy told reporters via Stefan Rosner of NHL.com Duclair intended to step away from the team for an indefinite period.

Duclair has played 11 years in the NHL with nine teams—most notably the Arizona Coyotes and Ottawa Senators (for whom he made his only All-Star Game in 2020).

Reading about that Chatfieid flip on McMichael. He clearly stuck the leg out to trip him.Very dangerous takedown.

West playoff picture continues to tighten.

St. Louis won tonight and tied their franchise best mark of 11 straight wins. In doing so, they hopped floundering Minnesota for the first wild card spot.

Elsewhere in the Central, the Jets continue to barely hold off a white hot Dallas gunning for the top seed in the conference. They're up 3-0 on Vegas while Dallas is idle. Keeps the gap between the two at four points.

Winnipeg absolutely cannot afford to lose that top seed after leading the division wire to wire. You cannot beat Dallas or Colorado fresh. If they kill each other in round 1 while you get a beat up and drained Wild team? Maybe.

Ovi and Bossy are the two best pure goal scorers i have ever seen. 4 was the best player but Ovi just scores and when he was younger he hit like a truck.

The most impressive aspect of Ovechkins career is the difference in the number of hits he’s credited with, as compared with others at his level, IMO.

Most goals all time and over 3,700 hits (4th all time) is utterly remarkable!

The Ovie-watch has been fantastic; historic.

The Caps announcer was under the impression Ovie asked Carbery to not put him on the ice with the goalie pulled, not wanting to score the record-breaking goal on an empty net.

Spencer Knight battled hard to not give up the historic goal and he and Ovie had a great moment after the game. Seeing Nick Foligno lead the young Hawks in congratulating Ovechkin was all class, as was Tom Wilson shaking hands with former combatant Pat Maroon, who will be retiring. Gretzky and wife in attendance with Bettman, etc.

The NHL has done a great job with this and as a lifelong hockey fan, it's been a joy to experience.

Next up: Ovie vs. Varlamov for the record.

I agree. When the subject comes up, I tell the youngsters at pick-up hockey how amazing a goal scorer that Bossy was. I feel like he will be somewhat forgotten because his career was cut short by injury. Scored 53 as a rookie and scored 50+ every season until he had to call it quits.

The youngsters remind me that goalies are better now. Which is true. But Ovi doesn't need to worry about a Mel Bridgeman or a Moose Dupont bearing down on him while he winds up. So I'd say the degree of difficulty is similar.

Bossy was a 50 goal-a-season machine ~ he would have been up there

Another guy who would have had 600 -700 is Neely. He was unbelievable player healthy

Good for Ovi! Records are made to be broken. I don’t think you can compare him and Gretzky as it was two different eras but man both of those guys love to score. I think Gretzky could have had 1000 goals but after his 92 goal season he seemed to be more about assists than goals, that I can remember

Anywho, Ovi breaks the record tomorrow and hopefully across North America people can watch it live vs waiting for a Twitter highlight post 👍

Then…..we Bruins fans can go back to focusing on……. ‘TANK-A-THON 2025!!!!’ 😂
