NHL 2024 - 2025 Out of Town III: Islanders remove Lou Lamoriello

Kris Letang was absent from practice yesterday and the issue was much bigger than that. The Penguins announced their defensemen “had successful closure of a patent foramen ovale (PFO; small hole in the heart). The procedure was performed at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital by interventional cardiologist Dr. Conrad Smith.”

The team listed recovery time at 4-6 weeks, which seems like an awfully short amount of time as far as having heart surgery goes.

Letang’s health situation has been dicey, the soon-to-be 38-year old has suffered two strokes in his career. The first stroke occurred in 2014 and the second in November 2022. The strokes have been related to an issue with Letang’s heart where a small opening in the upper chambers of his heart allowed a blood clot to go to his brain in one instance.

Letang showed determination and resilience to come back from his second stroke and play a game only 12 days later less than three years ago. He would be awarded the NHL’s Masterton Trophy in 2023 as a result for “being the NHL player who best exemplified the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey this season”.

Letang has three years remaining on his contract, but at this point playing in the NHL again takes a back seat of concern for the human being and family man that is dealing with all of this. The Penguins’ season ends tomorrow night anyways and getting back to health will be the main concern.

Hope he heals 100%, guy deserves good health the rest of his life, what courage he has.

The time for Letang to recover from heart surgery is actually pretty standard because of how insane medical science is.

My mom had a triple bypass just over 2 years ago and spent roughly two weeks in the hospital. 90% of that was because she couldn't get in for surgery right that second (she didn't wait too long obv) and they wanted to try putting a stent in first to see if maybe full on surgery could be avoided.

In terms of the actual surgery, she was home just under 72 hours after going under with pretty minimal restrictions. I was flabbergasted on how fast the turnaround was after speaking to the cardiologist lol.

But in Letang's case, i would hope he considers retirement if the need arises. He's had two strokes already and this could have easily led to a third if left untreated. That's not a good sign.

Actually that was The Code back then. One step away from a street fight.

Oh I know. That was my point. The hallowed "Code" which people talk about today didn't exist until designated fighters squaring off for staged fights. The only code in the old days was beat them up so they don't beat you up.

As an aside, Pat Quinn had 5 inches and 30 lbs. on Orr, and Bobby still got the best of him. You did not mess with Orr, no matter how big you were.

The NHL schedule is nuts. Carolina plays Montreal tonight then Ottawa tomorrow. Then I guess most likely Saturday or Sunday to start the playoffs

Why the league doesn’t end the season on Sunday and start it then next Saturday is beyond me. Just seems odd to ram as much hockey late then start the playoffs

Agree, some things make zero sense

Whelp, I'm a Caps fan for a few weeks.

This is so spot on.

“The Code” originated in the era of George Laroque saying “good luck” before the staged fight intended solely for the purpose of giving a young up brawler wannabe an opportunity to build some street cred.

Terry O’Reilly did not fight fair. And he was f***ing glorious, too. John Wensink could get nutty. Stan Jonathan nutty. Etc., etc. Cam Neely didn’t always fight fair. Why? Because he was in the red mist zone.

I remember so vividly the Bruins going into the crowd in NYC and Derek Sanderson fighting in the penalty box and crowd at home. f***ing insane then. But today???????? CNN, Fox, Social Media, ABC, CBS, Twatter, etc., etc. The world would spin off its axis.

I get it in today’s world but getting too nuts about a late punch in a legitimate “I’m pissed off” fight is pretty 2020’s.

Sincerely,

Old Hockey Fan Yelling At Clouds (happily, sometimes)

classy

Very very classy. However, I’m certain they gave Arteri an extremely stern talking too. Hope he’s ok. Must have been rough.
