Yeah sure, but I was referring to a scenario where the Avs would've had enough but Landy still wanted to make a comeback.

That just won't happen. Landy has garnered too much goodwill with this franchise that they would trade him while he's still attempting to make a comeback. They'll keep him through the duration of his contract if that's the case and just LTIR. Obviously the team would need to plan accordingly and this might mean more uncertainty with regards to cap management.

If Landeskog decides that he's had enough, he's done, we won't have a problem. As long as that's communicated clearly to the Avs front office, they can deal with it even with him on the books. Ideally, you then dump the contract somewhere else to deal with the annoying paperwork (his salary is still going to be coming from an insurance, he has 1M signing bonus in two years but that can be settled with a pick if a team was interested in getting him for cap floor purposes).

The issue that I've been banging on about Landeskog for a while, is that he has basically 100% control over the situation. The Avs can't tell him "we've had enough with your comeback attempts, you need to retire". It's simply not possible. Landy holds all the cards, and right now, it seems very much that he wants to keep trying to come back. And assuming there is no risk of aggravating his injury for civilian QoL (which IIRC has been said is not a risk), then he could very well decide I'll come try to make a comeback in 2026. He's under contract until 2029, he's got time.

And working in LTIR is still problematic.

By having your team doctor tell the player, he's unfit. Then the team doctor needs to go the NHL and the NHLPA and explain that medically Gabe Landeskog is unfit to continue his career and for his long-term health and safety can not dress up again in the NHL.

You then put his ass on LTIR until the end of his contract. If CMac didn't insure these contracts, that's on him and I'm pretty sure that would cost him his job.

With what little I actually know, I feel like the Avs have probably treated this the correct way thus far. It's not like we haven't used his LTIR space the last couple of years. We might have used it poorly, but the Avs were indeed dipping into and using most of it, as I recall.

However, this season is the season where there must be finality. The team allowed rumors to go around last season that Gabe was close. That he had asked the team to get to the next round so he "might" have a chance. But then he showed up at training camp and wasn't close. It's now the end of February and he's still not playing. If he does not suit up this spring/summer for the Avs, the Avs really should force the issue on him at this point and I do believe they would be well within their rights to do so.

Yeah, if he was to do that, then CMac and Sakic would be well within their rights to just waive his ass for an unconditional buyout and move on. It would suck to have that cap hit on the books, but if Gabe can't play.... there's really no reason to keep him around if he's insisting on the Avs keeping his cap-space open.

I could never in a f***ing million years see this situation coming to pass. Gabe needs to be given a chance to hit the ice again. He's certainly given the team his body and soul. That should count for something.

LTIRetire is exactly what I suggest should happen if his comeback this spring/summer doesn't work.

I also think he will be okay with it... as long as he's given this one shot to get shit together and attempt a comeback. That being said, I do believe he should have a shot-clock and that thing should go to zero on July 1st if he hasn't been playing and doing well.

A possibility, sure. The thing is, it's very easy for Landy to block out those teams with his 12-team NTC.

The Avs may very well be one of those teams as Friedman speculated

We've been talking about Landy a lot lately, but just to be clear there hasn't been any recent updates or rumors have there? I don't think I've seen any but maybe I missed them.

Are we sure they don't just still need him on LTIR for their deadline moves?
