Not sure it's ever possible with a $6.5M hit until 27.

Double retentention, if the Rangers are burning it down. Not sure if we have the assets for that. But this type of player, even if not specifically him, takes us from a fringe contender to a contender IMO.

Cap is going up and we don't have any big raises coming, if I'm not mistaken.

Right, but he doesn't make a ton of money, especially with the assumption the cap will be going up. All we really need him to do is crash the net recklessly. We don't have that guy. But imagine that guy making goalies nervous while Kuch assesses his options.

If he was 28, and not 33, I could be convinced. With his playstyle, I would be nervous of his future production and injuries, and it looks like he’s already starting to slide.

If the Rangers were willing to eat 50% and he was extremely cheap to get asset wise, sure, but I don’t think that would be realistic. If he loses a step or becomes chronically injured, he’s an anchor for another two years. IMO

Honestly probably not close to as much as a team with more assets. Definitely a 1st. Maybe a 1st and a prospect.

It's a gamble for sure. Because yeah, he could fall off a cliff as soon as this year. But the price would also be lower than a younger player like Tuch. I don't think we could come close to meeting that price tag. Kreider is a long shot, but it's possible.

The only really significant adds we have a chance to make will come with risks. We just don't have the assets.

I like Kreider's contract and love his style of play. I've wanted him for years but this might be the first time it's even plausible (forget realistic, because yeah, it's probably not).

Also, a note: JBB might be looking to get younger on the fly. The Guentzel move seems to show that. He might be looking for guys in the middle of their prime (30ish) rather than the end (35ish) in hopes of extending the window by a year or two. And so far he's been good with that.

But in the 2025 playoffs... man l, Chris Kreider makes us scary offensively. And Vasy looks like Vasy again.

What's the price for Kreider? He's basically the polished, high end version of what a certain player was supposed to become in Ottawa. 11 goals and a single assit for 12 points in 30 games and the eye test matches the stat line too, as he continues to look lifeless in NY. Still, Stützle badly...

And 11 goals in 30 games with that dumpster fire is very likely still capable of 35 here.

If he’s just a little injured, I would give a 1st or a little more for 50% retention. Cap wise that is probably our only way anyways.

He could help us for our cup window, but if he’s cooked he could be pushing it shut. That’s a lot of cap space and risk

I'd give more than a 1st for 50% retention. Then you're talking about a 3.1m cap hit, which allows us to add another player in the off season. I would pay a pretty decent price for Kreider at that hit. Because it lowers the risk substantially. If he doesn't work out, he's easy to get rid of and probably good enough to keep. But there's still a solid chance he scores 8 or 10 hard-nosed playoff goals in 25 games.

Kakko has a contract we could’ve gotten without doing anything crazy. New York retaining 50% on Kreider for 3 years is so far-fetched it’s not worth thinking about.
