Guenin was just an AHLer who was playing bottom pairing minutes because the Avs just had no NHL caliber dman... Jan Hedja was playing top pair..

The guy you're thinking about is Nick Holden. Roy was so pissed when Sakic traded him that he said publicly that he (Sakic) traded their best dman for a 3rd round pick...and it was the beginning of the end for Roy in Colorado.
No, I remember Holden. Barrie logged a bunch of minutes with Guenin too. Holden was surprisingly productive that first year he was called up, then they handed him that contract one year too early and he faltered. That 2014 offseason was probably the worst one in franchise history, it set the stage for the disaster that was to come two years later.

It’s clear Roy is still way too enamored with big, slow guys, especially on defense.

But he was enamored with Holden, not Guenin, and Holden wasn't slow. I don't think Roy liked Guenin, he just didn't have anyone else. It's insane how poor the defense was in those years.

Roy had a say in personnel until Sakic slowly started taking it away from him. To say Roy didn't have anyone else is like absolving MacFarland for Georgiev pre-Blackwood trade.

Also, Holden very much was a slow defenseman. He used to get exposed for his lack of speed all the time.

No, not at all. He was a big defenseman who was skating extremely well...he just had 0 IQ.

Yeah I’m inclined to agree here. I always assumed because he got caught up ice that Holden was slow AF but that wasn’t the case, he just had absolutely abhorrent positional sense and gawdawful gap control. When he wasn’t making a bad pinch he was trying way too hard to stand guys up at the blue line or neutral zone and he’d get burned.

I don’t think Holden was an elite skater but for a guy that big he could move really well on the ice.

But back to Guenin—Roy DID have better options. Not a ton better but better than that. He just refused to use them.

The D was something else in the Roy/Guenin Era

Year 1 it was
Hejda-EJ
Benoit-Barrie
Holden/Wilson-Sarich/Guenin

Year 2

Hejda-EJ
Holden-Barrie
Stuart-Guenin
Redmond
Wilson only played 3 games due to injuries

Year 3

Beauchemin-EJ
Holden-Barrie
Then a random assortment of Zadorov, Gormley, Bigras, Redmond, Bodnarchuck, Guenin, Gelinas
Stuart only played 6 games before injuries

Beauchemin played very well for 40 games and then totally fell off a cliff.

We had such hopes for Gormley when we got him only for him to do nothing.

Redmond, @Cousin Eddie aka Kento favorite! My best memory of him is the clip where Roy shows "2 2 done" Do you still have it @RoyIsALegend?

Mental illness is scary. Robin....

edit: I didn't read the entirety of this thread
edit:2 I'm not going to ask you guys to read this thread of tweets from the man, it's a lot. But I don't know what to make of it.

I can't understand a thing he's trying to say. It's just a word salad from a man that has sadly lost it (and maybe a bit of a language barrier?).

As for Lehner, before it was fully understood that he had issues beyond the stereotypical "crazy goaltender", back in his Sabres days, I couldn't stand him. Some of the stuff he was saying and his whole hot-head tough guy thing were ridiculous to me.

Of course, since then my views on him have changed as we've seen the stuff he's struggled with. Shades of Joe Murphy.

Yeah, Beauchemin was a revelation. Until he wasn't.
And I never knew why, but I had a soft spot for Wilson. Misguided hope?

Had Wilson been able to stay healthy, he would have been a great 2nd pairing D-man. The problem was, his playstyle which made him good enough for that role also lead to his many injuries.

The org is 2 for 3 on Wilsons playing well for them until not being able to play anymore

I'm not gonna lie. I had to look up Landon to remember the 3rd.

It’s hard to believe but Wilson when he was healthy he was the board scapegoat. Worse than Guenin and Beauchemin.

No he wasn't. This board loved Wilson.

The Ryan Wilson under Patrick Roy was a shell of his former self due to not being healthy. That's what made fans hate him in the lineup.

Wilson from 2009-2012 was loved.

Yeah after the whole Steve Downie for Max Talbot trade where you hear stuff coming from other teams like "we didn't even know he was available" and the Brad Stuart debacle, where they're trading a 2nd for a washed-up Brad Stuart and then re-signing him to a 3 year deal before he even plays a game with the Avs, can you really blame him? Feels like Roy didn't even ask anyone on the team - pro scouting staff or otherwise and just did stuff he wanted to do.

So I hope he takes over for Lou, he'll run that team into the ground.

I think he's talking about Colin Wilson.

Everyone pretty much loved Ryan Wilson.
