Its you that are shortsighted because you only see this situation from a "dont spend asset" point of view.

There is some major positive in bringing PLD now instead of letting him rot one more year in Winnipeg.

1) you won't have any competition to lock his services long term.

2)its a big proof of commitment and it will start the relationship between habs and pld the right way.

Listen, i do agree about not giving our A+ pieces, but FLA 1st + is a really small price for PLD.

The actual Bergevin moves is actually to hold onto your pick instead of surrounding your core and then drafting a bust and lowballing PLD comes july 1st and then crying about loyalty if he sign elsewhere.

Doing good businesses for all parties involved imply the Habs to make a push via trade for PLD and lock him ASAP. We will have a much easier time to lock him 8 years at a reasonable AAV if we acquire him now than if we wait.
It’s definitely shortsighted……PLD isn’t 18-21yo… this team is in a rebuild. What do rebuilding teams acquire 1st round picks.
The only exception to trading this rebuilding teams assets would be for a young stud goalie.

I love the Smith-Zegras comparisons, as they offer the same dynamism with their speed and hands, and coming with similar concerns on the defensive end. Knowing how starved we are for offence, Smith sounds like a good home run swing for a ppg player.

The other popular choice is Zach Benson. I'm seeing seeing parallels between Benson and Travis Konecny: smallish playmaking wingers with a solid shot, coupled with a good motor and relentless effort. Am I far off?

I do like Konecny and see him as en excellent complimentary player on a top 6, but not a core piece on a contender. He's a level below the elite playdriving wingers in the league. I wonder if Benson is in the same mold.

Very hard to rank Smith and Benson... making Reinbacher an easier pick to make.
It's the gap I see in Benson. If it goes wrong he will be something like Konecny, a player who at his best will be able to produce ppg and if all goes well something very close to Marner.

Edstrom seems really intriguing. Big centre with size.

Morin, as mentioned in another thread I think is going off with points as a dman.

Suniev is an interesting prospect. Russina playing in the BCHL and size wouldn't mind that guy. Bradley Nadeau around there for you, too ?

There's another Swedish centre with size, but I'm completely blanking on the name. Coupled with someone potentially falling, should be able to get another good prospect with their 2nd

Nadeau is down at 54 for me, he's got an insane shot but I'm not sure what else he's going to bring. I know Suniev scored less but the physical and tools package is too drool worthy in the 2nd round.

Felix Nilsson? Anton Wahlberg?

Is Smith that good of a skater?

I would see it like this. You see a lot of Konecny in Benson. But one important thing is that you see a lot of Konecny in Benson now, which gives credit to Benson being already like an NHL player at the age of 18. My point is that Konecny was nowhere near the level of Benson in junior and draft year if we compared the two. Benson oozes offense more than Konecny. I can't think of a reason to take Smith over Benson when Benson is as skilled and has the better motor and compete level is not even comparable. Benson is gifted, he's more of a Point/Marchand than a Konecny in terms of ceiling.

McCagg on his podcast is talking about a Russian newspaper article that says the KHL will put in measures to keep its players longterm.

He believes no Russians (Michkov included) will be picked in the 1st.

Don’t no bow credible his source is, but its going to be interesting to follow this going to the draft.

THAT is the real risk. Not his fckng contract

Very likely Michkov is gonna drop hard.
Maybe out of top 10 or 20 after the father death and Russian stance on players leaving.
So likely 1 of Benson/Smith/Reinbacher will be taken at 4 before we pick.
There will be another riser after U18s - I have a feeling it will be Leonard.

Bedard
Fantilli
Carlsson
Mitchkov
Benson

If not can décide between Reinbacher Yager and Smith for now but likely Yager

A healthy 51-year old man mysteriously drowns in a pond in Russia after telling his son (the best Russian prospect in 20 years) he was going for a walk. It's like a bad B-movie playing out for real. Russian prospects have bigger things than NHL hockey to worry about.

He’s just trying to push his narrative for his favourite prospects he wants drafted to look like the smartest guy in the room. Just like he pushed his narrative on Slaf. Guys a joke

Heres how I see this draft (assuming we dont win the lottery) :

Best case scenario : Michkov falls to us at 5-6 and after some Bobrov shenanigans, him and his family gets here after the draft.

Great case scenario : Benson (most realistic and beat option imo)

Good case scenario : Reinbacher OR Leonard (huge fan)

Meh scenario : Smith (unless he works his ass off at the U18) OR Dvorsky
