Those scout seems to like to chat a lot and not just to Grant... We will soon enter the main "a NHL scout told me " part of the scouting season.
I assume when your job is to consume hockey 24/7, that you’re just dying to tell everyone that you consume hockey 24/7 . Not a surprise that scouts love to talk to people willing to listen.

Man, I honestly don't care what side of the ledger you are on

Reinbacher
Smith
Leonard
Dvorsky
Benson
Moore
Yager

We are getting a damn fine prospect.. a DAMN fine prospect.
What if we all hop on the Barlow train and just attack you until the draft?

I've been seasoned through battles past.

I've won some, I've lost some.

Hopefully it turns out like Guhle, if they draft Barlow, where I don't dislike the player, I just preferred other options, but the progression is steep and upward and it comes out looking swell.

Maxim Strbak is a good candidate for that spot. RHD with good size and skill set. Steadily improving over last couple seasons, I would be really surprised if does not make it to NHL.
I like him but he's not in my top 37 anymore. I wouldn't be mad if got him, although I'd rather if it was later in the draft.

Barlow at 17 would be nice

not at 5

Agree... at this point Benson, Smith, Leonard, Yager and Reinbacher are all much better option than Barlow at 5.

At 17, tons of good option can easily be there, Wood, Honzek, Musty, Heidt, Danielson, Perreault, Cristall, Ritchie and Pellikka.

Hello draft enthusiasts, I come with a question. I don’t typically watch prospects other than the occasional highlight but I have an arm-chair draft question about Will Smith. Please take it easy lol.

Who would you compare him to in the NHL (assuming he hits his ceiling, or close to it)?

From watching a few of his videos his skating, shooting and stickhandling kind of remind me of Willy Nylander. Not sure if that’s accurate or not.

Thx / cheers!

His production in the USHL is just SO bad.. I couldn't use a high 2nd on him.

He's in that Marner, Huberdeau, Gaudreau mold.. high event, high skilled, likely winger who will act as the de-facto center for the line.

Im not even sure I would mind Barlow at 5 anymore. Kids good.

Huberdeau is the best one I can think of. Hes very skilled but hes just not a good skater, which makes the comparisons hard.

Maybe TJ Oshie with better playmaking and no sandpaper. Nylander fits too.

Maybe Kucherov.

You see the type. Hes not a "bad" skater because he has strong edges and he pivots well but he generates no power in open ice, which is a concern.

Edstrom seems really intriguing. Big centre with size.

Morin, as mentioned in another thread I think is going off with points as a dman.

Suniev is an interesting prospect. Russina playing in the BCHL and size wouldn't mind that guy. Bradley Nadeau around there for you, too ?

There's another Swedish centre with size, but I'm completely blanking on the name. Coupled with someone potentially falling, should be able to get another good prospect with their 2nd

Ive been a big Strbak fan since the begin of the season. Would be a great candidate at that spot indeed, especially if they decide to trade Mailloux for Dubois, which is a rumor Ive heard, apparently many Jets scouts attended London's games in the past weeks. We would have to secure Reinbacher 1st though.

At this point I have Benson in 5 behind Bedard, Michkov, Fantilli and Carlsson. But that's taking into account where he is today in terms of skating and size. I can see him as the third best player in this draft when all is said and done. In the scenario where he adds 25lbs and consequently his kicking and especially his skating improves considerably (and this is almost a sure thing in my head) I can see why someone would select him in 4 or even 3. If he makes a physical leap in the next season he'll explode to well over 2ppg on whl and a lot of people will wonder if he wasn't a steal on 5/8.

A poor man RNH is the most optimistic projection as far as Im concerned.

I really hate this draft, Im gonna be honest. I find it so hard to decide between Smith, Benson, Cristall, Reinbacher and even Dvorsky and guys like Barlow and Leonard.

I just have the nihilistic feeling that were gonna pick the worst out of that group and I don't even know which one its gonna be.

Would you guys do #5 for #9 and #18 (Detroits pick) ?

If we follow my list:
David Reinbacher + Nate Danielson
vs
Riley Heidt + Nate Danielson + Nick Lardis

For Bob
Benson + ASP
vs
Dvorsky + Cristall + ASP

For consolidated
Benson + Ritchie
VS
Dvorsky+Heidt+Ritchie

It’s interesting that the 2019 US was way better talent wise yet this years team outproduced that legendary squad. Anyone with ideas as to why?
The increase in (league) scoring isn't just at the NHL level...and it seems to be primarily the result of a downturn in goaltending and defenders quality after two (three?) great decades.

I'll preface this by saying that I love what Benson brings to a team. I think he can impact the game in more ways than just offence and I like him a lot more than Savoie/Geekie that were also high picks on the same team.

However, I've got big reservations with taking this type of player at 5/6. Small, poor skater, average shot, significant injury, and a winger to boot. He's agile, but he gets caught in straight lines by junior defenceman. He scores, but it's almost entirely because of his IQ and he definitely won't beat NHL goalies with his shot consistently. He's feisty and committed, but he's small and has already faced a major injury. Huge production, but plays on arguably the best offensive team in junior hockey. We can take the best player available at any position, but the value of a player that can play RD/C is always going to be higher.

Even with all the great things to Benson's game, I'm not sold. I don't see a huge amount of room to grow in a player that already does just about everything right. I'm not going to be upset if we pick him and I think he's going to be a great player. However, given where our pick is going to line up... the upside of Reinbacher, Dvorsky, and Smith is going to be veery hard to overlook.

Agreed on Benson. He could make us regret passing on him, but you listed all the concerns that I have with him and there are lots. Even if he comes hot out the gate I do think he’ll end up injury prone.

If we were picking a touch later, I’d be hoping he falls to us, but think top 6 is just too high for him in this draft.

Not sure I get the counter-argument that Benson only scores because of his IQ. Didn’t Claude Giroux base his entire career off that? Not big, not fast, not an elite shot. Just smarter than 99% of players and works his ass off. I’d much rather that than someone who only has tools. Josh Anderson should be a Top 10 winger with all of his tools.

I understand all these concerns and even agree, but he is not that small, there are many high-level players smaller than him. He still looks like a kid, plus he's one of the youngest in the draft, so yes, he might not have as much room for growth in the overall game, but when he does add a few pounds (and yes, he will) his skating will pass far from be a problem (because the mechanics are excellent, it just lacks power), his shooting will improve, which will make him more capable of beating goalkeepers. So yes, I agree that many will consider the top 5 too high for him, but I'm pretty sure that in a few years many will regret going above 5.

I think that Giroux is a very unique player and there's a reason he wasn't a top-5 pick. I'm not saying Benson won't score, I just think that translating his game to the pros will be tricky and that his ceiling may be a bit more limited than we'd like given his limited tools. None of Smith/Reinbacher/Dvorsky are all tools players and there's lots of room to grow both physically and in their overall games. As you're saying, there's a balance. But/Benson is a no brainer for arguing tools/toolbox. However, with very little separating the guys 5-10, I think it's just a harder conversation.
