I haven’t read about this anywhere and it may be a stupid question but don’t some teams buy insurance for contracts? Would the Mets insure a Correa contract? Is it even insurable at this point?

Wasn’t David Wright’s contract insured?

Would any clauses about injury time be the de facto insurance?

Sorry if this is a silly question.
Given that it’s a known, documented injury, it would be a very expensive risk to underwrite.

when does this ever learn?

is this team just jumping to sign correa and add on to that list? the giants didn't sign him should already have been an indication to steer clear.

I mean they drafted Kumar Rocker and then walked away over concerns over his health. At least under Cohen, they don't appear to just be throwing caution to the wind. That's pretty obvious here, too--if they weren't concerned with a long-term investment turning terrible, they'd just sign Correa to the damn contract. But they clearly recognize there is a potentially major risk, and unless they feel comfortable with the terms of a new deal, they're not going to move forward.

The Mets have done an amazing amount of stupid shit in my life, but I think they're managing this pretty well.

I'm beginning to think the Yankees made the Judge situation more dramatic than it needed to be so that they could declare "mission accomplished" in an off-season where they did very little.

No salary cap, who cares.

If he can help get the Mets a WS title, idgaf how bad that contract turns out to be.

I doubt Cohen will care much either, and in the worst case scenario where he cheapens out because Correa never plays again after a few years, then as long as the Mets win a WS, I really don’t care if he doesn’t spend until that contract is off the books.

Correa back to the Twins. Six years $200 million. Pending a physical of course.

I feel like the Mets will regret that. But, if they were that concerned about the ankle, good on them for showing restraint I guess.

Sure but insurance isn't free. Can't say whether Correa's injury is insurable.

Were all these quotes from people with "direct inside knowledge" wrong or just made up? For weeks they kept saying the deal is very likely to get done. It seems Correa had absolutely no intentionto agree to any injury protection clauses.

Higher AAV but Correa lost 7 years and $150 million over the last 3 weeks.

His ankle must be ground beef.
In a sense he didn't lose: after the medical, Cohen was only willing to guarantee around $150Mil for 6 years. So, Correa comes out about $40mil ahead (with an opportunity to earn another $70 mil over the term of the contract).

I'm glad the way it worked out. He wasn't willing to negotiate with his injury, we now have that money for pitching and defense, and he'll fade into MN obscurity.

I am disappointed, but if they were that concerned about the ankle then I understand it. And maybe it does become a blessing in disguise down the road.
