Six Cities Named For New Professional Women's Hockey League

The six cities - Montreal, Toronto, New York City, Boston, Ottawa, and Minnesota have been officially secured for the new Professional Women's Hockey League

The six inaugural markets for the new Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) have been confirmed. These are the "original six" of the now confirmed PWHL.

The six cities include Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto in Canada, and New York City, Boston, and Minnesota in the USA.

Minnesota is reportedly set to play in St. Paul.

Other cities initially under consideration includes London, Ontario, Chicago, and Pittsburgh among others. ...

New women's pro hockey league provides sneak peak on its 6 markets, including Minnesota

The newly established Professional Women's Hockey League provided a sneak peak as to where it's six franchises will be based Monday night, a day before it is scheduled to make the news official.

According to the PWHL's newly launched account on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, the teams will be based in the New York tri-state area, Minnesota, Boston, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. Each market had an account with an @PWHL prefix. The sites just happened to be the only six accounts @theofficialpwhl is currently following. ...

The PWHL is scheduled to formally announce its inaugural six franchises during a video conference call on Tuesday. Among the priorities in determining sites were markets that offer large enough arenas to host games as well as dedicated training facilities for each team. ...

In that time, the new league has completed second interviews with a group of general manager finalists, who include former U.S. national women's team captain Natalie Darwitz and former Swiss national team goalie Florence Schelling, one person said.

The new league will also announce it will be holding a player draft next month followed by a free agency signing period. Also discussed was the likelihood of each team having the opportunity before the draft to sign at least one — and perhaps more — exclusive rights' player, two of the people said.

Two of the people told The AP the league's schedule is expected to go as late as June, with the season overlapping the women's world championships in April.

There is still much work to be done before training camps are scheduled to open by December, with coaching staffs needing to be hired and the league identifying broadcast partners.

In another development, a fourth person confirmed to the AP that former NHL executive Brian Burke has been hired to become the PWHL Players Association's first executive director. Burke, who last served as the Pittsburgh Penguins president through April, has a lengthy track record of involvement with women's hockey dating to 2013 when he was a board member of the now-defunct Canadian Women's Hockey League. Cities/regions have been identified, but venues not yet announced. No team nicknames/logos revealed.

Brian Burke announced as ExecDir of union.

Six GMs hope to be announced by 9/1 (Friday).

Players can declare their interest/availability "for the draft" (IOW, players signed to deals with out clauses, NCAA grads, free agents). Teams can sign three players in advance of draft. 15 rounds (no pick trades) scheduled for 9/17. Teams will have to sign/PTO at least another 10 players in advance of training camps (opening in November). Handful of players/team can sign three year deals, rest will be on 1-2 year deals.

If the mods are going to create a separate forum for the PWHL, can they at least also make one to separate the ECHL from the toilet leagues?

To follow up on LadyStanley's post: IMO, penny to a pound that EVERY team in the new PWHL will continue using the nicknames from the NWHL/PHF days. Why change something that worked?

One reason is to put the NWHL/PHF era behind (which remains a sore spot for PWHPA members who will have considerable influence going forward) and start with a clean slate to allow the PWHL a future of its own.

There was mention made during Tuesday's media Zoom Call (streamed on SportsNet) of documents distributed by the League, including a CBA that purportedly provides insight into the details of what's ahead. I'm surprised major (or even middlin') sports outlets haven't e-published those documents. The only official info I can find so far is this League press release posted on PRNewsWire.com at the time of the Zoom event. :dunno:

Now one has to wonder if the Provincial Women's Hockey League, where a lot of Canadian NCAA players come from, will rebrand.

I'm actually getting pretty excited for this.

Today is the first day of free agent signings - each team can sign up to 3 players, and then the rest of the rosters will be made up via draft on Sep. 18

Training camp in November!
