One guy happens to be the best goal scorer in the game while being elite defensively, not like the other. Say what you want about the Leafs failing in the playoffs, but people are exposing themselves by trying to take a shot at Matthews game.

How many elite defensive forwards aren't top 4 forward pkers for their team?
AM isn't a slouch defensively, quite the opposite, but idk about Selke finalist.

It's understandable, given that most people pay the closest attention to Leafs in the playoffs and Matthews doesn't show up for those.

Yes, but not killing penalties doesn’t make you bad defensively. Some teams don’t want their stars on the PK because they’re more useful offensively.
Matthews is so good defensively he even shut down himself offensively in the playoffs.

I'm not really a stats guy, but I've heard and read that Matthews is actually pretty damn good defensively by pretty much all metrics. Like miles ahead of the rest of the top centers in the league, apart from Barkov maybe.
It should be Barkov's, he's probably the new Bergeron in that he will be nominated pretty much every year and win multiple trophies during his career. It's a reputation trophy for the most part, it's hard to define defensive play purely based on stats and those who vote have no time to actually watch enough of potential candidates.

Most pk minutes of his career. Like 50 something seconds a game meaning he’s probably the part of the third pair over the boards for forwards on his team.
The other 2 guys are over 2 minutes a game.
43 seconds/game puts him at 8th amongst Leafs forwards lol.
