I wanted to bring attention to this interview of this perspicacious young man:

Were he covering a team like the Maple Leafs or the Canadiens, he'd have 50x the attention, no doubt

Yea I watched his videos sometimes. Definitely a better listen than something like Locked on Sharks.

I was searching for an adjective that didn't seem condescending or hyperbolic and settled on perspicacious.

I like him too. I do wish he'd ditch the 'class is now in session', but he has a pretty thoughtful perspective, and it fits the persona he created. Ultimately, it contributes to being more memorable, which likely drives subscriptions (which drives content I benefit from), so I get it. It'll be fun to watch him grow and improve.

Spot on with locked on. Feels like state sponsored media which tells me what to think. All the locked on team podcasts kind of sound the same to me (and I do mean beyond the ad scripts), so maybe that's part of it. Teal Town can be amusing occasionally, but I wouldn't seek it out. The one I don't get is the hockey guy- it's just reading lines and puckpedia information- league wide, but I haven't seen any analysis.

Sheng and Keegan remain in a class of their own .

A little ironic when Sheng literally is hired by the Sharks broadcasters, and his coverage clearly changed from independent analysis to who do the Sharks want me to praise this week?

I can't wait for the next feature on how Goodrow is actually really good and every scout says so.

@Kcoyote3 you guys should consider inviting him some time. He'd be great for end of season analysis.

And @Hobocop could be a fun guest if you do a Barracuda themed one.

I'm sure that'd be a treat for anyone listening.

But Sheng isn't "hired" by the Sharks broadcasters? He's occasionally paid for a feature article by NBC Sports, so those articles may be more favorable as a handshake agreement with Sharks org, but Sheng is absolutely independent and I am really surprised at this new strand of anti-Sheng convo. Have seen multiple people denegrate him as some milquetoast mouthpiece when he's often highly critical of the team.

Brodie is the mouthpiece, being a direct employee of the org.

The negativity just really seems over the top.

Sheng is paid by the number of times he says "Um" during the podcast.... :sarcasm:

I was a massive fan of Sheng and his work, but in the last couple of season (which just coincidentally coincided with his partnership with NBC Sports) has fallen off a cliff IMO. He isn't "often highly critical of the team" anymore. For example, even after the season he wrote pieces about how making a coaching change didn't make sense and Quinn should be given more opportunity - and then after he was fired, magically it was the right call to make.

It's also funny that when there is an uptick in fan criticism of Ferraro or Kunin, there seems to be an oddly timed article about how they're actually good because of this highly-specific microstat.

No one has ever relied on Brodie for in depth analysis and critique like we did with Sheng. That's why Sheng has copped it in the past year or so - because his writing changed.

I haven't seen the change to the extent you have. Every one of his game reviews in loss, his public statements on the podcast, all are critical of the Sharks being very very bad and a long way away from good. He often tempers fan excitement about draft picks. He has criticized Grier and asked hard questions to Warso.

What positivity he does show is trying to find silver linings and interest stories about player growth. And he happens to disagree with you and others who think that grinders are totally dog shit and worthless and writes articles about that - that doesn't mean he's some mouthpiece, it just means he sees the game differently than you do (or sometimes I do).

Sheng is an independent journalist - he gets paid by clicks and subs. There's only so many ways you can shit on a team and have people want to read it. People will actually read (and even get pissed off by) stories about how Graf, Thrun are developing, or whether Smith should or shouldn't be in the AHL and what scouts think about that.

At least he has a point of view. What articles I read by Pashelka are just very boilerplate, and Max Miller doesn't get nearly as deep. I just don't agree with you that he's a patsy just because he likes Kunin more than these boards or the average fan.

I'm not sure why anyone really cares about the content that Sheng puts out there. It's fine for what it is but his reach isn't going to be the difference between someone staying or being moved. Even if he was a complete Sharks org sycophant, there isn't any substantial action made because of it. If we were Montreal or New York where a writer may have some discernable affect on how the fan base makes their feelings known then I could see that but we're not. Our base is entirely passive and doesn't have a unifying voice of any sort.

I just got an email from the Sharks promoting the sale of jerseys from Hertl, Givanni Smith, Blackwood, Labanc, and Barabanov but also Liljegren. It's a sign folks, but I think we've invested too much into getting his name pronounced the way he wants it.
