His underlying numbers from last season look horrible. If those are an accurate reflection of his play it’s really not that crazy the Wings had to attach a pick to dump him.
But his underlying numbers from the 2022-2023 season were excellent. There was reason, based on those, to feel he had strong bounce back potential. He is now showing that the bounce back potential was very real.
And I'd argue that even if he were guaranteed to be that 26th percentile defenseman, bending hard but not completely breaking in a very difficult role on a horrible Wings team, a 2nd round pick was still a steep cost to get rid of him at only $3.2M. 26th percentile is more like 6th/7th D than it is totally horrible; Ceci, Ferraro, Rutta, and Thrun are all below 26th percentile by the same metrics.
You can argue around the edges until your heart is content but it was a pretty rough trade at the time and it has aged horribly. Especially considering Ben Chiarot, making the same salary and playing the same position as Walman, is single-handedly keeping them out of playoff contention.
