We wouldn’t get Dobson without giving up Eklund.

Also, is there a rumor that he might be traded or is this purely hypothetical?
I wouldn't give up our only young and even relatively proven forward worth a damn, even for a really good young defenseman.

I’m not advocating for it. I’m just saying we wouldn’t.

I don't think it's a deal I'd make now if getting Dobson required Eklund but it's hard to turn down a deal where you're moving a winger to get a #1 on defense. Wingers can be replaced relatively easily especially compared to top end defensemen. But the reality is that the Islanders would want Eklund+14+more for Dobson and understandably so.

Gretzky would have never been traded if NMCs were a thing in the 80s.
If you’ve actually seen any of documentaries on the trade you know even if NMC’s were around that trade still would’ve happen. Gretzky had way more input in that trade it wasn’t just a simple act of Pocklington just calling Mcnall and trading him. Gretzky has said he choose to get traded to LA

I also don't know how much Carolina would value futures given that they are contending although of course they could use those futures to trade for other pieces. Maybe offer up pick #33 (pretty much a low first), Ferraro (potential to be a #4 guy when he's not misused and has an actual partner and coaching staff, could thrive on a team like Carolina and maybe even reunite with Burns lol), and a few B-level prospects like Bordeleau and Gushchin that are closer to NHL ready (potentially)?

C, gritty winger, 2xD. Other than DeMelo none of the players are on my personal wish list. @Hodge will like one of the suggestions, though I’m not sure the contract meets his expectations.
I like JGP as the 3C for the Sharks the next two years, only if he doesn’t cost anything to acquire.

I also like Joshua. Only 28. His contract is predicted to be $3.25m x 4 years. Probably would be $3.5-4 for the Sharks.

Personally, I’m not feeling DeMelo. But I was never a fan.

I do wonder if that’s a reason for NYI to acquire the 2nds now. Use them to get rid of some of the cap dumps.

I think DeMelo has grown a lot since his Sharks days and has shown he can absolutely fit on a playoff caliber top 4.

Much like his Sharks days he does his business quietly but very effectively. Solid in his own end, good first pass out of the zone, chips in some secondary scoring, no frills but effective in keeping play moving in the offensive zone.

I’d also add, he’s on my list, partly because he has experience here and hopefully that familiarity means he’s open to returning; vs other vets who aren’t familiar with west coast / bay area and may be resistant to signing here simply due to cultural or geography reasons.

That’s some good insight. I appreciate you sharing your POV!

I’m just not in love with DeMelo enough for his predicted contract (4 x 5.3m).

Alright, I’ve extracted all of the projected RD contracts from this article:

FA RDs:
All contract numbers from Daily Faceoff using AFP Analytics

B. Montour (30) - 6 x $7.7m
M. Roy (29) - 5 x $5.8m
S. Walker (30) - 3 x 4.65m
B. Pesce (30) - 5 x $6.25m
J. Chatfield (28) - 4 x $3.65m
C. Tanev (35) - 3 x $4.7m
A. Carrier (30) - 3 x $4m
T. Myers (34) - 2 x $3.1m
M. Dumba (30) - 3 x $3m
D. DeMelo (31) - 4 x 5.3m
V. Desharnais (28) - 1 x $1.1m
T. Barrie (33) - 1 x $1.75m
J. Haakanpaa (32) - 1 x $1.5m

I bolded Walker and Chatfield because I like their projected term the most relative to their age and skill set. Barrie is also a tempting buy low candidate who also fits as a potential PP QB. He’s also spoken highly as a great locker room guy and leader.

I like a lot of these guys as potential upgrades on our blue line but I worry about how we're going to get rid of players to open lineup spots for these sorts of additions.

Roy, Walker and Barrie would be amazing upgrade to that RD position, but yeah we need to get rid of some players before that.

Just start burying or non-tendering guys.

I think we could find a buyer for Rutta, too. He won't return much of anything, but that opens a slot.
