Honest question: Why does Colton deserve more than Newhook? Statistically they are pretty similar (on an aggregated basis), the key differences being:

+ Colton scores a few more goals
+ Newhook has a better plus / minus
+ Newhook is younger
+ Both cup winners
+ I'm "guessing" Colton is more physical and plays PK time? Not sure

I think 2.9 (almost 3) per sounds about right over term.

Here's to start...

Colton fits the team better, has produced more (albeit in more games played), but I think he's more valuable than Newhook for the role he'll be asked to play.

Yeah, they certainly didn't go out and get players known for staying healthy this summer either

RyJo coming off a surgery and only played 55 games last year, Drouin only played 58 games. Wood missed the entire 2021/22 season...

Colton is at least coming in as a guy that has shown the ability to stay healthy so far, we'll see how long that lasts with the Avs though

Tbh this is all the more reason why the Avs really should not be done right now. They need to grab another Top 9 forward so that when 1-2 injuries hit, we're not already having to put Wood into a Top 6 role, or Cogs/Meyers playing 3rd line minutes.
I agree we need another Top 9 and preferably Top 6 guy, but feels unlikely at this point. How much cap space do we have left?

I think ultimately we’re probably better off saving the cap for the trade deadline which will allow us to evaluate what we’ve got and probably let us add someone better than we would be able to add right now.

I keep looking at Arizona's defense, thinking maybe they could use Girard and we could try to get Crouse in return. But then I realized Armstrong is tanking. So maybe we should help him with that. Crouse for MacDermid.
This is exactly the trade I’ve been trying to speak into existence all off-season.

Roughly $2.5-3.5M.

Really feels like it solidifies Colton in the mid-to-upper 3s on a shorter term deal and in to the 4s on a longer deal
Different situations IMO. We have the Zacha direct comparison for a 1 year deal in RFA, that's where Colton's camp will be. Then we have a range of what UFAs are worth for these sorts of players. Colton has to break out to ~50 points, but if he does those years are valued on the UFA market between 5-5.5. Discount for some risk and we are at 4.5-4.75m per for their ask. Breaking that down, the ask with term will basically be for each year, add 4.5-4.75m per year of term. If you want 7 years, the closer you get to 4.75m. If you want 2-3 years, the closer it gets to 4m. Avs will clearly come below these asks.

I'm guessing the deal is somewhere in the 4-5 year range with an AAV 4-4.5m. Creativity in singing bonuses might push it to the lower end, especially in the 26-27 season.

Colton is a much better player, but more than anything, Newhook's deal is for the remaining of his RFA years where he is a UFA right after. Colton's contract will only include one RFA year, then you have to start paying for UFA years. If you just want Colton's RFA year, then the mid 3s number is reasonable.

Girard had 1 more point on the PP than Toews did last year, both had only 1 goal.

That Newhook contract is rich.
I'm not going to delve into the stats but 1 point is nothing, that's a 2nd assist somewhere where he did nothing.

There isn't a team out there that would play Girard over Toews on a PP. Girard shouldn't be playing PP with his below average shot.

I wouldn't sign that contract as a player if I believed in myself.

I'd gamble.

That's bad imo. I want my players to trust themselves.

Good move for him, if he wants to play it safe..
That contract takes care of him financially for the rest of his life. He can always gamble later, it's a bridge contract.

If he overperforms that contract, he is going to get capital p Paid on his next one. If he doesn't and fulfills the Newjost prophecy, well, he has $12 million in the bank. That buys a lot of non-chickpea pasta in post-retirement days.

If Newhook hits, he'll be in line to have a large 8 year deal at 26. If he doesn't, he's made enough to be secure for life (if he's smart about it). I personally see the Dach and Newhook deals for Montreal as a nice risk-reward for all parties. Montreal gets the players locked in reasonably and if they break out, significantly under market. Dach and Newhook while technically RFAs right at the end of their deals, they get the DeBrincat/Meier option while getting some nice pay in the meantime.

Hence why Toews is on PP2, which he does perfectly fine.

Girard is simply useless on the PP because everyone knows he isn't going to shoot. The defenders just play pass and lean towards the shooters.
Girard is not useless on the PP. He often sneaks down low and crates a lot of chaos. I don't think he should be above Toews and Bo for PP2, but saying he's not good just isn't true. If they do go with only 2 Dmen on the PP, I'd be fine swapping out any of the D men for the other if they struggle.

Maybe Daniel Briere likes Sam Girard.

G for Tiki Bar as a premise of a deal sounds interesting.

I wonder if Avs have some deals in the fire, but can't sign anybody until they know how much cap space they will have left when Colton signs?

Wouldn't be surprised if Colton and Toews extensions are the hold up.

Then again, its possible the Avs are simply going to try to add 1 or 2 super cheap depth pieces and roll into the season to see what they're in need of.
