Sykora showing off his cooking skills by suprising his Billet family with dinner and flowers tonight. How can you not love this kid!

Yeah, I don't know. Sounds like he's just going to be doing some skating and some workouts. He also has the NHLPA Rookie Showcase (along with Cuylle) on September 5th, which is just a glorified photo shoot followed by a light scrimmage. I think he's just trying to get geared up.

He's flying to Washington on Monday so I expect today to be his final day of commitments with the Petes.

Larsson scored a lot of goals (16) in the Swedish J20 last year. Makes me think he might have a very good shot. He's also 6'2 200. He's a year overages. USHL to NCAA might be a very good move for him.

My only minor issue is that Larsson is already 19 and going to the USHL first. This is his D+2 season coming up.

At that age he should go straight to college. That said, having his NHL rights until the end of his D+6 might be low-key nice.

Could be schooling....even acclimatization issues. He comes over and he's not thrown into a situation where he might struggle with language and keep his grades up at the same time to stay eligible so he can play. He's got a window of a year in the USHL which is a very good league. It's got to be a big step for a 19 year old to come from Sweden to North America....different culture etc. And it could even be getting his accreditation altogether figured out with Northern Michigan U. It's not the best program but it's a good one for hockey anyway.

He seems to be a bit of a late bloomer. If NMU wasn't ready for him to join the program this season (I could understand their hesitation) then even at 19, the USHL could be a good intermediary step allowing him to adjust to the game in NA as well as life in that region of the country--which, as a Swede, you'd think he could handle just fine, but who knows.

Anyway he's a fifth round pick that a lot of people didn't even have ranked, so I'm not as concerned about where he's playing as much as making sure he's getting a lot of time somewhere.

All solid reasons but still the combination of (1) drafting an overager who's (2) going to USHL is very unusual. I'd ben there maybe 2-3 at most out of the whole draft class of well over 200 strong.

The Traverse tournament was so much better. Not sure why we stopped doing that. 2 quick, back to back games vs the same players isn't as exciting....but it's something so I won't complain much!
Yeah even not to the remote boonies at Traverse, isnt there a Toronto rookie tournament.
Whatever, they're really nothing burger, just some games to set up rookies in best game shape for Camp

Pretty much. It is good to get a look but reality is it's not going to make any difference really about our prospect's preparation for training camp. Maybe a couple at most of our prospects that would be there will actually see the NHL this year and maybe none depending on whether Othmann, Cuylle, Sykora etc. would have played and those guys might not even play against the Jr. Flyers.

They just never bothered going back to TCT after the pandemic. Not sure if it's just a lack of effort or a conscious decision.

The Rangers should spend time and effort into setting up its own prospect tournament. Invite the Bruins, Canadiens, Sabres, Islanders and Devils prospects and have a tournament-style event.

Rookie Camps rosters beginning to roll out - saw Preds, CBJ and SJS this afternoon

Ben Roger - D drafted 49OA(Ott) but not signed by June after his time with OHL Kingston, is (per EP) intending to attend Canadian Uni, but will be at CBJ camp.

Another potential MIA prospect: Simon Kjellberg seems to have disappeared from the Northern Michigan roster. No idea what's up there.

With his tenacious play, and if he does well in Hartford, I can see him getting a call up and playing a few games by All-Star break.
I don’t really see the rationale with that with Sykora. It seemed like the narrative was more AHL or Juniors. Absent him blowing the doors off the AHL which is unlikely, let him simmer. Maybe he’ll be an important cog in a playoff. I would tell him early on to plan on making himself comfortable.

don't think anyone has an expectation of him being in the nhl this season, think the general outlook on him is there's a possibility he gets a look like cuylle or outside chance he comes up full time late in the year. i don't think anyone is counting on that taking place though.

personally i agree it's entirely possible he sees some nhl time at some point for a couple reasons. the biggest is he plays a game that rangers have a desperate need for - so that alone opens the door should he earn a look. there's a few reasons to think he's got a real chance - his age and room for physical development allowed for some real leaps to take place in the immediate future. he's coming off a very solid year and got a taste of the ahl so he knows what to expect/prepare for. given he's known to be a really hard worker, it wouldn't surprise me to see him come in in phenomenal shape and more physically competitive than people expected. he also seems to be a great teammate and have the kind of attitude that earns respect and gets noticed, which can go a long way towards people finding opportunities for you.

obviously a lot of this is based on unknown variables, so again there's no assumption of him being ready at any point this year. i do, however, think he's got a lot going for him and his progress in all areas seems to be trending favorably, which leads me to think he's got a shot. that said, development isn't linear for anyone, so he could find a roadblock this year just as easily as he could floor it in the express lane.

Not that this is reason enough to hold a player back but Sýkora is slide eligible for this upcoming season. He only just turned 19 and he isn't physically developed yet where he would not be outmatched in the NHL.

Sýkora playing in the NHL by the All Star break seems too opportunistic.

Yea, let him play in the AHL for a year or two. No need to rush him. We saw the negative effect it had on Kakko. Hopefully Hartford can have a couple playoff runs down there.
