What Makes a Prospect?

A player will be considered a prospect until he meets the following criteria:
  • If a prospect is a skater (forward, defenseman) and has played in 65 NHL games or more before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday; or, if a goaltender has played in 45 NHL games before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday, that player will be considered graduated to the NHL. Conversely, if a player completes the season of his 24th birthday without passing those milestones, then that player will no longer be considered a prospect, regardless of the player’s status with his NHL club.
  • An NCAA player who signs his first contract at or above the age of 22 has three years to meet the above criteria (65/45), while those NCAA players who turn pro under the age of 22 will be subjected to the criteria above.
  • European players who sign their first NHL contract at or above the age of 22 have three seasons from the time they sign that contract to meet the above criteria. Those European players below the age of 22 who have signed an NHL contract will be subjected to the criteria in section one.
  • Notwithstanding the previous criteria, any skater who has played six seasons since his selection in the NHL Entry Draft, and any goaltender who has played seven seasons since his selection, will be considered graduated for the purposes of prospect eligibility. Any player signing at or above the age of 25 will not be considered a prospect under these criteria.

NOTE: These are general guidelines and should be followed the majority of the time but certain players may still be listed as prospects if circumstances warrant.

Eric Ciccolini is playing his fifth season of eligibility for Clarkson where he should have a big role. He was with Michigan for four years.

Riley Hughes similarly is leaving for Ohio State where his role is less clear. He is leaving Northeastern.

Oliver Tarnstrom has left Rogle and the SHL to sign with Brynas in HockeyAllsvenskan.

Lauri Pajuniemi has signed with Malmo in the SHL, and we don't know at this point whether he'll be be given a qualifying offer to retain his rights.

Some guys graduated like Kalynuk and Lockwood.

Scanlin, Jones, Emberson, and Khodorenko we'll have to wait on. I think they keep the first three but say goodbye to Khodorenko.

Yeah rooting hard for a re-sign of Jones and Emberson, seem like no-brainers given our loss of depth at defense.

Shocked Scalin is not talked about more. Ld undrafted and didn't he lead the Wolfpack in +- during the regular, for a rookie that's impressive since the Wolfpack were better later in the season in my opinion. I'd like Robertson to get a look too

so this is shaping up as a potential landmark moment for NYR Prospect watchers,
as a one-time NYR prospect may become the next NYR HC ..

I miss Traverse City Touranment. Any chance Rangers are back in that again?
almost certainly not this year, those Flyers dates are precisely when TC was last year

IIRC NYR haven't gone during Drury-dom

TC is far and remote, so lots of logistics and time taken away from Camp activities
and it seems NYR had way more injuries and losses, than successes, there

it was a good tournament, and likely good for bonding

the most prominent TC memory I had besides KK's goal was being being super excited to watch Christian Thomas after a really good couple of years in the OHL, and then having to witness his decapitation by Brayden McNabb

Pretty sure he got a concussion on that and it impacted him the rest of the season.

His play was night and day before and after that hit (including the entire previous season).

They had some great TC Teams in the late 2000s/early 2010s. I loved that one year in 2011 when the Rangers broadcasted the entire thing. It was deemed too expensive.

I'm thrilled the younger Barbashev is still a prospect and they have a year to sign him. I hope that gets wrapped up in the coming months.

Can anyone tell me about Will Cuylle? What type of player he is and what is his future NHL outlook? Thanks!
Good size, decent skater. Not afraid to go to the dirty areas. Not sure where he tops out offensively but he did pot 20 in his first AHL season. Could be a really good gritty 3rd liner or a decent 2nd liner depending on his offensive development.

I see him as like a 25-30 point player who PKs and protects leads.

He might turn into a Bates Battaglia/Mike Leclerc type (production wise) with the right linemattes.

Ryane Clowe ceiling, Keegan Kolesar floor. That type of player.

For this happen, Mark Ciaccao needs to be out of here.

We need to stop projecting our insecurities as a fanbase on a random member of the Rangers team staff

Look at his work going back to Arizona. Two 30 goal scorers since the NHL reboot? He is not the sole reason for the issue but objectively, he stinks.

Kravtsov's biggest problem is Kravtsov. He's got the talent but at least so far has lacked heart and determination. It didn't look to me like Vancouver was going to turn him around either. He wasn't productive....getting scratched now and again. Tocchet wanted him to stay over the off season. Instead he signs with his old KHL team. Maybe some were surprised by that.....I wasn't.

I’m certainly not married to the skills coach, but I think everyone is talking out of their ass about him. I haven’t heard a single concrete thing he has done wrong or badly. I get the take of “I don’t see the results” and that is fine, let’s try someone else, but to say he’s THE problem just seems like scapegoating without any real facts to back it up.

How much time would the skills coach have even put in with Kakko and Laf, who have been Rangers since the day they got drafted?

He is a great person to use as an excuse for them being flops though.

Kravstov was a bad pick, The Rangers fell in love with him because of a playoffs and didn't do their HW on his lack of emotional intelligence. Ciaccao here long before though.

He's been here about a decade and the facts are that no one really broke out while he's here says a lot.

No Ardvidsson or young guys who just come in and score 30 goals. Every other team has has one.

And we all watched the video of him "coaching" Howden, it was atrocious.

He's not the entire problem. He's not helping or doing anything good though.
