2023-2024 NHL Power Play Units

The new NHL season is almost upon us, and it's time to put on your GM hat. I am excited to see folks' predictions and insights. Who will make up the Power Play 1 and 2 units for your favorite team this year?

Here's what we'd love to see from you:
  1. Your projected Power Play 1 unit
  2. Your projected Power Play 2 unit
  • Consideration of rookies at this point is interesting. Who will stick for the season?
  • Please be respectful of everyone's opinions.
  • Remember, this is all in good fun and speculative. We all know things can change as the season progresses!
Can't wait to see everyone's predictions. Let's drop the puck on these forecasts and get ready for an electrifying NHL season!

I will start off with my attempt at Chicago's Power Play. Please don't mind the quality of the second PP unit....

There are some teams I am especially interested to see due to the options they have:
  • Anaheim - Drysdale as main PPQB?
  • Arizona - Cooley on PP1? Where does Guenther slot?
  • Buffalo - is Benson going to stick?
  • Calgary - Weegar ready to run it?
  • Columbus - Weresnki on PP1? Provorov on PP2?
  • Los Angeles - Doughty still the guy? Brandt Clarke going to stick? Spence?
  • Minnesota - is Addison finally ready? I know he struggled last year. Faber?
  • New Jersey - who are they splitting up the riches of their forward group?
  • Philadelphia - is Cam York the answer? Is Couturier healed up?
  • San Jose - who is even going to be on this? Thrun QB? How has Zadina looked?
  • Seattle - is Ryker Evans making a case? Dunn running it? It feels like PP1/PP2 get equal opportunity.
  • Toronto - is Reilly still underwhelming on the PP? Klingberg's to take? Liljegren?

Think you posted this on the wrong boards.
I only posted it here due to the fact that the "NHL Lineups Thread" resides in this forum. If an admin feels appropriate to move, please do so. Thank you!

It would be helpful to see the positions. And no I don't mean 3F 2D, that's what the nhl line combinations site shows and it doesn't tell you where people play on the PP.

I will try to take some time later to make it as nice as @BonMorrison's thread and maybe we can sticky it for the year, or incorporate it into that thread. I think a lot of folks are frequently interested and not necessarily from a fantasy hockey perspective. I like to see who/how teams are running their units throughout the year.

Columbus - Weresnki on PP1? Provorov on PP2?
probably werenski but columbus fans pretty much universally want it to be boqvist playing the point on PP1.

werenski is a great two-way defenseman at 5v5 but really struggles on the power play (indecisive/slow passer, atrocious at keeping pucks in the zone) and at 3v3 (careless with the puck).

boqvist popped off on the power play last year and the righty-righty element feeding laine worked a lot better than having werenski shovel the puck over from a higher angle.

EDM PP1
McD / Drai / Nuge / Hyman / Bouch

EDM PP2
Kane / McLeod / xx / xx / Nurse

PP1 gets most of the playtime. Unit 2 gets the rest if there is time left because we usually score in these so no PP2 squad needed.
My guess for the X's on the 2nd unit are Brown/Holloway. Foegele saw time there last year too. I'd expect Ekholm to get some time there as well.

Canucks seem to like to load up PP1:
Kuzmenko, Pettersson, Miller, Boeser, Hughes

Canucks PP2:
Beauvillier, Hronek, Garland, and revolving door of others (Hoglander, Suter, Studnicka, Myers, Wolanin, McWard)

Could see Miller or Boeser dropping to PP2 when they want to even things out a bit.

Habs...

#1 - Suzuki, Caufield, Monahan, Dach, Matheson -- actually pretty decent

#2 - Slaf, Anderson, Newhook, Gally, Guhle/Xhekaj -- Xhekaj actually got some time last year, but I'd like to see them try Guhle this year. Unless Norlinder makes team.

How has Sean Monny looked this postseason after his limited 25 games last year? Back in form?

Schenn
Kyrou - Buchnevich - Thomas
Krug

Saad/Blais
Vrana-Kapanen-Hayes
Perunovich

PP has honestly gone to crap since we lost Perron (very underrated on the PP). And I forget who the PP coach was last year, but we went from top 5 to 20-something.

Blues hired new coaches to surround Berube so hopefully they can get us back on track, but like I said, losing Perron (and Tarasenko) doesn’t help.

Our top unit isn’t great. They’re definitely skilled but most of them are way better off the rush (Thomas, Kyrou, Buch). They make a lot of high-risk/high reward passes/plays, which makes them pretty inconsistent but unpredictable at the same time. It’s mainly run through Krug and Thomas with Kyrou being the main trigger man.

Our 2nd unit I assume will move through Hayes and Perunovich. I’d rather see Vrana and Hayes switch sides but this is what I’ve seen throughout preseason. Perunovich is the guy to watch here though. If Krug was gone, he’d be quarterbacking the top unit. He’s extremely poised when walking the blue line and moving the puck. Just really adept at putting guys in good positions to shoot. Not a heavy shot from the point but he gets it through which creates scoring chances.

Overall, probably a low to middle of the pack finish in terms of rankings. They have a fair amount of skill on both units but really no elite finishers.

Another Q to put out there is how Florida's units will shake out with Ekblad and Montour both on the shelf to start the season. I imagine Forsling will get an opportunity. Any surprises for those two units?

This one should have an asterisk. Pp1 plays a tad more than pp2. And by a tad, I mean pp2 would be lucky to see 30 seconds lol
