Off season is a better time to make ballsy trades.

No trade would've been able to fix this team. 2/5s of the rotation are mental midgets, springer can't stay healthy, Bo hasn't been right all season, a bunch of guys with hot starts have cooled down the past month, oh and the bullpen is capable of becoming a tire fire at a moment's notice. What trade is magically going to fix this?

Exactly.

Um...

..trading for a necromancer that can revive some the greatest players of all time so the Jays can sign them for league min?

There needed to be more than just impactful moves to the BP.

The Jays didn't have the farm system to trade for elite players unless of course, the team wanted to gut it completely.
See I don't agree. You can trade for decent BP pieces without touching elite prospects. Their lineup despite struggles didn't need an overhaul. A good pitcher and 2-3 BP pieces was enough. If the front office won't pay, than they are just scared and thats a fatal flaw.

I’ve said before that I think Atkins had an underwhelming offseason as well. He needed another bat and Kikuchi was a bad signing. Not sure how much I trust them going into this offseason.

I didn't want them to do what the Padres did. Impactful moves to the BP were fine. Bass is okay but can't be your only and best move. Pop again shouldn't be one of your main moves.
Really overall a half measured approach that just isn't good enough.
I don't blame the players for not handling it well if thats what has happened

Thats fair. Now what is this season is what these players are? Decent chance of that
Bichette is better than this
Berrios isn't this bad.
Some guys like Guerrero and Springer(when healthy) are having good seasons but not great by their standards.
Some of the players exceeding expectations this season have regressed over the past month.

I'd say this is a team capable of playing at a Top 5 level but they need more young pieces pushing from below to cover for injuries and underperformance. Team will need guys like Moreno and Tiedemann to push through

Who would you have wanted? I really wanted Castillo but he went for a large package.

This might be true. The whole team having potential doesn't make sense that kept getting passed to the fans if all these issues exist

With Baltimore looking like they can play ball again the Jays are destined for last in the AL East again next year.

But is bullpen the issue with this team? There are glaring weaknesses all over. I'm tired of people just focusing on the bullpen when there are much bigger holes on this roster. Is a pitcher throwing 2 or 3 innings a week going to change this teams fortune? No it's not. Pop and Bass have been fine and the team is still losing.

Imagine being one of the hottest teams in baseball leading up to the deadline with a 5 game lead on the top wildcard spot, having put up 25+ runs on a team just a few nights ago, and your general manager goes out and gets you two relief pitchers, a stretch guy and a utility bat hitting at .650 OPS on the season.

Definitely inspiring. :sarcasm:

I would think the response to "our management doesn't trust us enough to make big moves" should be the prove management wrong though.

Not to continue playing the inconsistent baseball that played into the manager getting fired, plagued the team in years past, and created the whole distrust in the first place.

Big TDL moves should be reserved for teams that have played like real contenders or are on the verge of a rebuild and maybe only have one more year to even somewhat compete anyways. Blue Jays fall in neither category. They are young and still have a very bright future ahead, with many of the guys on the farm potentially contributing in the middle of their window. They have also played like an underperforming team that has put them on the bubble for much of this year.

It’s a negative feedback loop that turned into a self fulfilling prophecy. ;)

Honestly, they’ve looked lethargic and lacklustre since the deadline. I think they were expecting bigger moves to bolster the roster and Atkins underdelivered badly. I’m not saying they’re moping, but they’re playing like crap.
This is 100% it.

They had a fairly schedule before the TDL. Royals, Tigers, Red Sox, and the Cardinals who were missing their two best position players.

Castillo was more ace like which wasn't really what I wanted. A mid rotation 3rd or 4th starter would be fine.

That wouldn't have done much TBH.

It's not the issue but it is a major issue. Sadly this front office has shown many times bullpens don't matter to them so I'm going to pretend they will fix it in the off season. There are other issues but having a legit BP would have at least turned some losses into wins

Players play the game though. They are in the best position to stop it.

Atkins could have made a big move and unless all of those struggling guys step up, we are still losing a ton of games.

Historically, you can't trade or sign your way out of problems, especially at the TDL. Typically applies to every sport.

If this team was playing to their capabilities, maybe more gets done at the TDL. They played like a bubble team, and they got a bubble team TDL.

Maybe but you need to try. A 3rd or 4th starter at least pushes Kikuchi out or maybe some insurance on Berrios.

This team needs a CF, SP, and 2B upgrade.

Bullpen is something I wouldn't spend much assets or prospect capital on unless you're so deep you don't have any glaring holes.
