This team has almost entirely been powered by flukes and lucky breaks in this series.

Trying to be positive, but man you would think a supposed contender would be better than this against a team like KC...

The funny thing is even with how bad the hitting is and how injured/inconsistent the starting pitching has been, they ranked;

Position player WAR: 3rd in the AL and 4th in MLB

wRC+: 3rd in the AL and 4th in MLB

Starting pitching WAR: 3rd in the AL and 10th in MLB

Defensive runs saved: 3rd in the AL and 4th in MLB

So in all major categories as a team they are pretty much 3rd in the AL. And that’s with an injured staff and lineup that is hitting like shit.

Except when it comes to relief pitching WAR. They are 14th in the AL and 26th in MLB.

Ideally Stripling replacing Ryu to join Gausman and Manoah will help. Berrios’ is getting slightly better and if Kikuchi’s IL stint works like it did for Richards then the Jays starting pitching looks better which helps the relief pitching. Kikuchi also had good numbers with Jansen as his catcher. He sucked with Kirk and Moreno. So a healthy Jansen helps. Same goes with Berrios.

Pretty much everyone is below their averages except Gurriel, Springer, Kirk and maybe Teo. If any of these guys show up, it’s a success.

The pen is a shit show but I believe Richards hasn’t give up a run since returning from injury. Cimber, Garcia and Phelps all have a higher WAR than Romano. That’s 5 guys you can trust if healthy now. Add in Mayza at 6. Thornton is your long man. Castillo is your optional swing many. Need a BIG deadline acquisition here, maybe 2 to replace Thornton and/or Castillo.

If they can win today. Recalibrate over the break with Schneider at the helm and go in strong into the deadline they might have some hope. Schneider has shown a lot of positives so far. Moved Vladdy up and Bichette down and Tapia has only started twice and hasn’t hit above 8th and went 5-8 in those games.

They go on hot streaks and cold streaks. Problem is when they go on a hot streak, it makes sense - they should be winning. But when the lose, it doesn’t make sense because they are losing games they should win.

Hopefully with players getting healthy and settling into roles, with a non idiot manager, they should be better. A big acquisition or 2 should help as well.

Just a matter of if it’s a enough to make the playoffs and win in the playoffs. Getting there isn’t enough.

I get that Zimmer is meant to be a bench player but how you have someone hitting .111 halfway through the season still on a major league roster in itself seems like a failure

Shows how weird of a game baseball is. They've looked like ass for a good majority of these last 6 weeks and yet the stats reflect a different story.

It's like my buddy telling me Vlad is a one year wonder because of him looking "shitty" this year..yet his wRC+ is still hovering at like 126.

Get Zimmer and his crimson chin looking ass off this roster please and thank you.

I don't give a shit about "muh speed and defense" when he makes Tapia look like Kenny Lofton hitting wise.

I’ve never seen an MLB player look so completely broken and lost at the plate. He needs to go to the minors and completely rebuild his mechanics and confidence.

Crazy thing is that he’s still a positive WAR player because he’s so good defensively.

Fangraphs has his WAR at -0.2 on the season.

Kirk's size/proportions will never not be funny to me

5"8, 245 pounds. Dude looks like a fridge.

Pudgy catchers have been a thing before too. Shoutout Bengie Molina and hitting for the world's slowest cycle.

I'm not sure how a guy with an OPS of 466 can be a positive value player even if he's Ozzie Smith defensively. Zimmer is as bad offensively as he has good defensively.

Actually now'a a good time to ask since it's being discussed. What's the difference between bWAR and fWAR? I tend to look at baseball reference more since it's easier to pull up the stats I need but fangraphs is way deeper in terms of the stuff they track.

Struggling to hit against a pitcher with a 6+ era. This team just can’t figure it out

Man when they whiff, they whiff ugly.

It's like no one on the team is capable of laying off breaking pitches off the outside corner of the plate.
