The 2016 Jays did lead the AL in ERA by like half a run, shame the offence ran out of gas during the Indians series thou.

That was the first year with Shatkins, and they really didn't seem to want do much that year. Not often you get a management change when the team is contending. So it was a weird spot for them. They didn't really help the team much during the deadline.

because they knew the team was not long for contention. They didn't want to push future assets out to prop up a team that might get one shot before it implodes.

And it did implode. We wouldn't be where we are now if they didn't exercise restraint then.

Yea, I agree. They let the team play it out.

What happened to Seattle and Boston this year? I guess both played over their heads last year.

Seattle was probably always a mirage. They had a stupid good record in 1-run games last year and that's usually not a repeatable skill. Couple that with the fact that their big FA acquisition (Robbie Ray) has been a massive dud.

Seattle didn't do their homework with Robbie Ray, he played well in a contract year with him winning the Cy Young. Before that, he was inconsistent as heck so gotta give the coaching staff more so Pete Walker for tuning his mechanics.

Food for thought, I turned 16 when the last time the Mariners were in the post season. I'll be 37 in November and it looks like they ain't making it either lmao.

Is their prospect pool good?

It wouldn't be unreasonable to expect he could maintain some of his advances without Walker around. It's not like he's a goldfish who will forget everything 5 minutes out.

But last year he put up a career high in innings and it seems like maybe he's feeling the brunt of that now with reduced velocity and by the looks of his pitch mix he's also turning to his slider more in an attempt to offset that he's featuring a hittable fastball.

Some of his peripherals look like there might be hope for him, but that likely depends on whether or not there's something seriously wrong with his arm or not.

Seattle's pitching has been an issue. Flexen and Marco Gonzales are terrible and I think they have had some bullpen problems

Gilbert is a stud and Kirby looks pretty solid. If Ray can bounce back a bit, that's a good top 3. It's too bad Brash is dealing with control issues or else he could've rounded out the top 4. They should be aggressive for a pitcher or two as we approach the deadline.

Offense has been fine other than a couple of injuries and some very slow starts (Winker, crap luck). As for Kelenic, who knows if he'll fix his plate discipline issues. Seems like he has taken step back this year

As I mentioned in the offseason, Winker basically only hit against righties last year which hid the fact that he can't hit lefties.

This is also one of the reasons why I want (and wanted) Toronto to pursue Votto with Cincy kicking in money. If you want an easy win against Cincy and Votto is hitting 3rd, you start a lefty opener, then put your starter out, then ensure that another lefty faces him later. He's an average (at best) hitter against lefties and a masher against righties. If you put him between Vlad and Teo, he'd only face righties.

Small sample, but:
157 wRC+ vs L
67 wRC+ vs R lol

With some better luck, those numbers will definitely improve vs RHP soon and perhaps the LHP stats come down a bit

He has an 80wRC+ for his career versus lefties with this included.

He has a 141wRC+ vs righties.

Max Kepler, Emilio Pagan of Minnesota Twins to miss series against Toronto Blue Jays - TSN.ca

TORONTO -- The struggling Minnesota Twins have arrived in Toronto without regular right fielder Max Kepler and relief pitchers Emilio Pagán, Caleb Thielbar and Trevor Megill; all of them are on the restricted list to comply with the Canadian government's COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

The four players will miss the three-game series against the Blue Jays. The Twins were waiting to announce replacements until closer to game time on Friday night. Canada requires anyone traveling to the country to have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, the second one at least 14 days before entry.

Pagán discussed his decision not to get a shot with reporters before the Twins departed for Toronto.

"I know that there are going to be people that are very angry for this opinion and the stance, but that's fine," Pagán said. "I feel like I had a choice to make, and they have also a choice if they're going to be mad at me or not."

Pagán was the losing pitcher on Thursday afternoon in Detroit after allowing a two-run homer to Daz Cameron in the eighth inning of a 3-2 defeat. He's one of the late-inning relievers for the AL Central-leading Twins, who have lost seven of their past 10 games, all to division bottom-dwellers Detroit and Kansas City.

"I've gone to every guy in this locker room and explained where I was, and how I came up with my decision, and apologized because I do know it's hurting the team," 31-year-old Pagán said. "I do not believe this is a baseball decision. This is the Canadian government. It's not even an MLB rule."
