7-0 and we are using Romano? I get he hasn’t pitched in awhile but with a game tomorrow and an off day on Thursday, you skip him today and use him tomorrow no matter what.
It's been 7 days. If tomorrow turns into an actual save situation, I'd prefer him warmed up to game speed. He will survive two days in a row followed by a guaranteed off day.7-0 and we are using Romano? And what would be the difference of 7 or 8 days rest? It’s already a long period, an extra day wouldn’t hurt.
Better off keeping him ready if you need him Wednesday than using him in a 7 run game with an off day coming up. He has only gone back to back 4 times this year with 2 of them coming over the last 7 outings where he was averaging close to 20 pitchers per outing.
No need to stress him when you don’t need to.
Tapia 5th means Kirk is not in the lineup? Dumb move.
Vlad's DHing. As long as they want to use the DH spot Vlad/Springer/Teoscar/whoever through, Kirk's playing time is going to be somewhat limited, especially when it's a day game after a night game.
I'm happy to see Biggio back in the lineup... he's looked much better since coming back, so hopefully he can get on a bit of a run.
It sucks because he is our hottest hitter right now. Would be nice to go for the sweep today with our best lineup. Oh well.
I think he was suggesting that if they need him in a high-leverage situation today, they're better off with him going on back-to-back days than they are with him not having pitched in more than a week. I think that's a fair argument, especially if you look at Romano's career splits - he's more dominant than ever when he goes on back-to-back days, and he's not great when he has long stretches of days off.
Using a low-leverage game as a low-stress, "shake off the cobwebs" appearance to get him ready in case they actually need him today makes more sense to me than waiting until they need him and hoping there are no cobwebs.
I get it but if there were any cowebs last night then he might have been pulled or thrown close to 30 pitches where he wouldnt be available tonight anyways. I only use him when i need him and they didnt need him last night.
I think we overused Romano (for good reason) early in the season, i take any possible rest he can get especially against teams like KC when we have a stretch vs the Yankees, Rays and Boston coming up.
Wait no its on sportsnet I see... ughYouTube exclusive today
I'd guess that the Youtube broadcast is only exclusive in the U.S. However, it looks like that broadcast may also ve available in Canada -- the pregame show is currently available.YouTube exclusive today

There has to be a point of diminishing returns on giving a reliever rest though, right?

Potentially, depends on the reliever. Some need the work, others would just throw a bullpen and that is enough.
If Romano requested to go in, then i have no leg to stand on. But i just dont see the difference between 7 or 8 days of rest. Especially when he pitched after 11pm last night and if he is need today he may be called on at 5pm, less rest than you'd like with some one of Romano's elbow history.
In the end, Walker and Montoyo have more information than me so there could be great reason to let him close it out. My point maybe moot and/or unnecessary. Just not a good look to have your closer come in a 7-0 game. If you dont need him today, no harm no foul. But if you need him and he isnt available today or he pitches poorly and loses the game, then the decision to bring him in yesterday should/maybe questioned.
